The rheology of soft-flowing systems, such as concentrated emulsions, foams, gels, slurries, colloidal glasses and related complex fluids, has a larger and larger impact in modern science and engineering. Much of the fascination of these systems stems from the fact that they do not fall within any of three basic states of matter, gas-liquid-solid, but live rather on a moving border between them. To understand the flow mechanism, it is necessary to have a look at the micro-scale dynamics of its constituents (i.e, droplets for emulsions, bubbles for foams, blobs for gels, etc.). Abstract:
Abstract Stray earth current associated with DC powered transit systems can create problems for industries that rely on buried metallic facilities. In 1981 the Toronto Transit Commission, with the co-operation of local utilities, embarked on a program to reduce the magnitude of stray earth current associated with the traction power system. While both surface and subway DC powered systems are in operation in the Metropolitan Toronto area, the work effort to date has concentrated on the subway system due to the higher power requirements of the vehicles. The objective of this work has been to inc

Abstract This paper addresses fundamental mechanisms of stress corrosion cracking by simulating the 3D distribution of electrical charge at the tip of a stress corrosion crack. Ledges and steps on freshly created surfaces interact with electrons that move about on that surface in an effort to maintain a net negative equipotential. Excess electrons stick to the ledges, creating nanoscale variations in electrical polarization of the metal-electrolyte interface. The excess electrons, responsible for the negative free corrosion potential, have a spatially varying density that supports local variat

Abstract Galvele introduced a new quantitative framework for localized corrosion through his seminal paper on acidification and chloride accumulation in pits and the need for a critical product of current density and pit depth to sustain this local chemistry. This concept, introduced in 1976, holds good today, but has been enhanced by the ability to conduct more complex computations, better modeling of concentrated solutions that could be present in local areas, and the ability to perform in-situ chemical analyses in pits. The purpose of this paper is to review the progress in these areas with

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Gouging of boiler tubes has been commonly attributed to the dissolution of a protective magnetite film due to caustic attack, followed by precipitation of a non-protective magnetite scale. Furthermore, copper and nickel compounds were assumed to preferentially precipitate in the gouged area and to enhance the corrosion process. The present paper challenges some of the accepted assumptions and presents a new understanding for this corrosion phenomenon. It is argued that the magnetite film loses its protective nature as a result of localized high-heat input caused by flame impingement.

In this study, 58 pomegranate concentrate samples collected directly from the local producers were adulterated with 2 different corn syrup and beet sugar syrup at different rates as 5-50% (w/w). The spectra obtained by FTIR-ATR spectroscopy of authentic and adulterated samples were evaluated by PCA chemometric methods. PCA method was used to distinguish the authentic-adulterated samples, select the spectral region and data reduction. The PCA-loading plot shows the most effective wavenumber to distinguish authentic samples from adulterated ones, which was determined to be in the range of 1200-9

Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) dish systems use a parabolic dish to concentrate sunlight, providing heat for a thermodynamic cycle to generate shaft power and ultimately, electricity. Currently, leading contenders use a Stirling cycle engine with a heat absorber surface at about 800°C. The concentrated light passes through an aperture, which controls the thermal losses of the receiver system. Similar systems may use the concentrated light to heat a thermochemical process. Post-conflict elections can pave the way for democratisation and peacebuilding, but can also lead to renewed conflict. Minimum conditions for ensuring that elections promote the former and reduce conflict and instability include: peace and demilitarisation; international involvement; not holding post-conflict elections too early; holding national and local elections separately – ideally, local before national; election systems (notably proportional representation) that distribute rather than concentrate power; independent, permanent and well-resourced election management bodies; and media that

This paper studies the effects of changes in local public education budgets on individual schooling attainment and migration, as well as on local labor market outcomes. I leverage the introduction of FUNDEF, a large federal program that redistributed public education finance across Brazilian municipalities in the late 1990s, as a source of exogenous variation. Using a cohort-exposure design, I find that, at the individual level, doubling the program-related public education budget led to a 1.4 percentage point increase in the likelihood of completing primary school, and a 0.5 percentage point

Abstract:
We develop a measure of chronic joblessness among prime-age men and women in the United States—termed the detachment rate— that identifies those who have been out of the labor force for more than a year. We show that the detachment rate more than doubled for men since the early 1980s and rose by a quarter for women since 2000, though it is consistently considerably higher for women than men. We then explore the economic geography of labor market detachment to help explain its rise. Results show that the detachment rate increased more in places with weak local economies, particularly those that

We study a model of the impact of climate risk on credit supply and test its predictions using data on all wildfires and corporate loans in Spain. Our findings reveal a significant decrease in credit following climate-driven events. This result is driven by outsider banks (large and diversified), which reduce lending significantly to firms in affected areas. By contrast, due to their access to soft information, local banks (geographically concentrated) reduce their loans to opaque affected firms to a lesser extent without increasing their risk. We also find that employment decreases in affecte

Abstract:
In developing countries, such as most Latin American nations, a small number of large foreign buyers dominate exports, exerting significant market power. Due to their market power, different buyers for identical products can end up with varying prices, influenced by the buyers power. Larger buyers often receive prices with markdowns (discounts). In concentrated markets, buyers act as a buffer against exchange rate shocks. Markets dominated by powerful buyers exhibit lower sensitivity of local currency prices to exchange rate fluctuations.

One major difficulty in developing fitness-for-purpose based flaw acceptance criteria for pipeline branch connections is the calculation of the stress distributions in the vicinity of the welds. Even with the latest computer aided modeling technologies, direct finite element modeling of branch connections using 3-D solid elements can be time consuming and cost prohibitive. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the possibility of using more computationally-efficient finite element approaches to determine the stress distributions local to branch connections.
