The rheology of soft-flowing systems, such as concentrated emulsions, foams, gels, slurries, colloidal glasses and related complex fluids, has a larger and larger impact in modern science and engineering. Much of the fascination of these systems stems from the fact that they do not fall within any of three basic states of matter, gas-liquid-solid, but live rather on a moving border between them. The boundary concentrated finite element method is a variant of the hp-version of the FEM that is particularly suited for the numerical treatment of elliptic boundary value problems with smooth coefficients and boundary conditions with low regularity or non-smooth geometries. <p>This master thesis deals with steel girders subjected to patch loading caused by concentrated moments. There exist no good methods to calculate by hand the ultimate resistance for this load case.
