Nowadays, with a worldwide market penetration of over 50% in the mobile telecommunications sector, there is also an unrelenting demand from the subscribers for ever increasing transmission rates and availability of broadband-like experience on the handset. Due to this, research in next-generation networks is rife. Such systems are expected to achieve peak data rates of up to 1 Gbps through the use of innovative technologies such as multiple-input and multipleoutput (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA). Two more ways of boosting capacity have also been identified: sh

Abstract:
As robots become increasingly available and capable, there has been an increased interest in having robots continue to perform autonomously over time despite changes in their environment. This thesis introduces several algorithms for localization of autonomous mobile robots in real human environments with the goal of having them autonomously deployed over extended periods of time. Monte Carlo Localization with Sampling-Importance Resampling (MCL-SIR) is commonly used for indoor mobile robot localization, with the frequently prescribed suggestion of increasing the number of particles to increas

The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7) of Agenda 2030 calls for an increase in the use of renewable energy sources, among other targets. The percentage of fossil fuel-fired thermal generation for electricity is increasingly being reduced as renewable energy technologies (RET) advance in cost-competitiveness, and as greenhouse gas and industrial air pollutant emission limits become more stringent. In certain cases, renewable energy contributes to energy security by improving a nation’s trade balance, since local resources are harnessed and imports are reduced. RET investments

Meier, Alexandra. "Biofouling of natural and artificial surfaces in the marine environment and possible antifouling strategies for long-term, in situ deployment." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2013. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/386072/.

Abstract:
Biofouling is a major problem for long-term deployment of sensors in marine environments. The aim of this project is to find a practical and effective strategy to prevent the biofilm formation on sensors; especially in the marine environment. This requires understanding of: 1) variability in the nature and severity of fouling as a function of the deployment location. For this purpose the planktonic and biofilm microbial community structure of the Mid-Cayman ridge were examined. 2) The effect of biofouling the material from which the surface is manufactured. 3) Efficacy of antifouling strategie

Hydrocarbon deposits in the form of petroleum, natural gas, and natural gas hydrates occur offshore worldwide. Electromagnetic methods that measure the electrical resistivity of sediments can be used to map, assess, and monitor these resistive targets. In particular, quantitative assessment of hydrate content in marine deposits, which form within the upper few hundred meters of seafloor, is greatly facilitated by complementing conventional seismic methods with EM data. Advances in microelectronics over the last decades have led to miniaturization of computing devices and sensors. A driving force to use these in various application scenarios is the desire to grasp physical phenomena from the environment, objects and living entities. We investigate sensing in two particularly challenging applications: one where small sensor modules are worn by people to detect their activities, and one where wirelessly networked sensors observe events over an area. Abstract:
Seafloor compliance is a non-intrusive geophysical method sensitive to the shear modulus of the sediments below the seafloor. A compliance analysis requires the computation of the frequency dependent transfer function between the vertical stress, produced at the seafloor by the ultra low frequency passive source-infra-gravity waves, and the resulting displacement, related to velocity through the frequency. The displacement of the ocean floor is dependent on the elastic structure of the sediments and the compliance function is tuned to different depths, i.e., a change in the elastic parameters
