Abstract:
AbstractThe karyotype of Chironomus tenuistylus, unlike that of C. longistylus, lacks large heterochromatic blocks at the centromeres and a nucteotus in arm C. Also, the banding pattern in 4 of the 7 chromosome arms differs between the species. The banding patterns belong to the most primitive ones in the thummi-complex. An inversion polymorphism has been found in arms A and B of C. tenuistylus, in arm B (rarely D and F) of C. longistylus. The larvae of C. tenuistylus have a distinct dark stripe on the clypeus and blackish coloured antennal pedicel and gula, and also differ in certain head mea

The new genus Longistylus of the family Nemesiidae is described from the Brazilian Cerrado. Longistylus ygapema n. sp. is recognized by the male palp with a globose bulb and a slender embolus, two times longer the palpal tibia, slightly curved retrolaterally and with no keels.

Amorphophallus Blume ex Decne. sect. Amorphophallus in India is revised. It is the smallest of the three sections in India with five species, viz. A. hirsutus Teysm. & Binn., A. kachinensis Engl. & Gehrm., A. longistylus Kurz, A. napalensis (Wall.) Bogner & Mayo and A. paeoniifolius (Dennst.) Nicolson. Amorphophallus paeoniifolius is the widely distributed species in India with two varieties, viz. A. paeoniifolius var. paeoniifolius, and var. campanulatus (Decne.) Sivad. Amorphophallus longistylus is the only species of the section endemic to India.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/bj

Abstract:
Movement, growth and natural mortality rate of the red spot king prawn, Penaeus longistylus, occurring in waters of the Great Barrier Reef off Townsville, Queensland, were investigated in a series of tagging experiments. Adult P. longistylus did not migrate after leaving nursery areas. Their growth rate was slower than that of the conspecific species P. plebejus, and significant inter-annual variation in growth parameters was observed. The natural mortality rate, assessed by sequential tagging experiments that eliminated the possibility of confounding with the rate of fishing mortality, was es

In the coastal region of central Queensland female red-spot king prawns, P. longistylus, and the western or blue-leg king prawns, P. latisulcatus, had high mean ovary weights and high proportions of advanced ovary development during the winter months of July and August of 1985 and 1986. On the basis of insemination, both species began copulating at the size of 26-27 mm CL, but P. longistylus matured and spawned at a smaller size than P. latisulcatus. Abundance of P. longistylus was generally three to four times greater than that of P. latisulcatus but the latter was subject to greater variatio

Abstract:
The distribution and abundance in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia, of the three zoeal (= protozoeal) stages of Penaeus merguiensis, P. esculentus, P. semisulcatus, P. latisulcatus and P. longistylus are described. All species were largely coastal in distribution. The zoeae of P. semisulcatus were the most abundant and widespread penaeid larvae in the Gulf, with highest densities in the north-western and south-western areas. Those of P. merguiensis, the next most abundant, were found only in coastal areas in the north-eastern, north-western and southern Gulf. The larvae of P. esculentus and
