AbstractThe karyotype of Chironomus tenuistylus, unlike that of C. longistylus, lacks large heterochromatic blocks at the centromeres and a nucteotus in arm C. Also, the banding pattern in 4 of the 7 chromosome arms differs between the species. The banding patterns belong to the most primitive ones in the thummi-complex. An inversion polymorphism has been found in arms A and B of C. tenuistylus, in arm B (rarely D and F) of C. longistylus. The larvae of C. tenuistylus have a distinct dark stripe on the clypeus and blackish coloured antennal pedicel and gula, and also differ in certain head mea

Their growth rate was slower than that of the conspecific species P. plebejus, and significant inter-annual variation in growth parameters was observed. The genus Pseudexechia Tuomikoski is re-characterized and described, including a thorough morphological study of the male and female terminalia, providing homology assessment of the various parts and substructures. The 25 currently known species of Pseudexechia are tentatively grouped into four species groups that are characterized mainly by structures of the male terminalia: the canalicula group (Holarctic), the longistylus group (Afrotropical) the trisignata group (Holarctic and Oriental), and the trivittata group (Holarctic and Oriental). The ten European species of Pseudexechia are then re

Fishermen's logbook data were used to describe the distribution of fishing effort and the composition of the commercial catches in Torres Strait. Catches consist of tiger, endeavour and king prawns. Additional information on the distribution and abundance of the individual species was obtained from four trawl surveys carried out at 3-monthly intervals during 1985. Each survey extended over the entire area of the commercial prawn fishery in Torres Strait. A new species of Fagopyrum (Polygonaceae), Fagopyrum longistylum, is described and illustrated from Huili County, Sichuan Province, China on the basis of morphological, caryological, and molecular data. F. longistylum is morphologically similar to F. gracilipes from which it differs in having green stem and short-styled flowers with long anther but it is self-compatible. In addition, F. longistylum is a diploid species with 2n=2x=16 while F. gracilipes is tetraploid with 4n=4x=32. Morphologically, it is distinctly different from all known species of the Chinese Allium by its outer and inner filaments with 1-toothed on each side, which is fairly rare in the entire genus Allium, suggesting it is an independent species.
