Purpose To identify PAX6 mutations in patients from four Japanese families with aniridia. Methods Polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-single stand conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis (SSCA) was performed in probands of the families, and restriction analysis using MaeIII or AvaI was carried out in other affected family members. Results PCR-SSCA demonstrated in the proband from one family an extra-band in the PCR product for PAX6 exon 8. Base sequence analysis revealed that the patient is a heterozygote for a C to T transition mutation at codon 203. DNAs from the patient and another affected

Abstract Background: There are large individual variations in the responses of risk factors for coronary heart disease to alcohol consumption. To clarify the factors responsible for these individual variations, we studied the relationship between blood pressure, serum lipids, and uric acid and the genetic polymorphisms of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) 2 and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) 2 in alcohol drinkers. Methods: We examined 133 male workers who drank >300 g of alcohol per week. Information regarding lifestyle habits was obtained by questionnaire. The ADH2 genotype was determined by

The immune response to maedi-visna virus has been investigated, both in persistently infected sheep and in the acute phase of the primary immune response to infection with maedi-visna. Maedi-visna infected sheep develop detectable levels of anti-viral antibody by 4-6 weeks after experimental infection. These antibodies are directed against the envelope and core structural proteins of the virus and initially are of the IgM isotype, but later switch to IgG. These IgG anti-visna antibodies are restricted to the IgG1 subclass. The functional significance of this isotypic restriction of

Following onset of clinical disease there is a progressive increase in symptoms until death occurs.
