Abstract:
An approach to the analysis and interpretation of the spectra of photoinduced circular dichroism (PICD) of semiconductor nanocrystals, in particular quantum dots, based on their comparison with the spectra of magnetic circular dichroism (MCD), is proposed. It was shown that the MCD and PICD spectra have similar features. The values of parameters similar to the known parameters A and B of the MCD spectra characterizing the splitting and mixing of states were determined from the PICD spectra.

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) has been detected in YBa2Cu3O7–x films in the visible spectral range from 1.5 to 4.5 V (275–825 nm). The MCD spectrum correlates with the absorption spectrum, and its magnitude attains values up to (1–5)·10−4 T−1 at the extremal points. Superconducting and nonsuperconducting samples display different kinds of dispersion and temperature dependences of MCD. For all the investigated samples, the magnetic field dependence of MCD has the form aH+b right up to 7 T, where the coefficient a depends on the temperature and wavelength at which observations were made, whi

This review of the application of the MCD spectroscopic technique to porphyrinoids aims to illustrate the features and unique information that can be obtained and used in the assignment of the optical absorption spectrum and also the electronic structures of porphyrins and phthalocyanines. By illustrating each of the major and readily available spectral features with simple compounds we hope this review will act to guide new users in formulating the questions that room temperature MCD measurements can answer. We have measured the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of X-ray emission spectra (XES) for gadolinium and terbium in the 4d–4f resonant excitation region. Clear MCD signals in the XES were observed and they dramatically changed as the excitation energy changed. Especially, an extremely large MCD signal appeared with the 8D resonant excitation for gadolinium. Comparison between the MCD for XES and total photoelectron yield (TEY) shows that the XES are very insensitive to the surface state. As a result, the measurement of XES was proved to be a superior technique for estimating the genuine magne

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of spinel ferrites MFe 2 O 4 (M = Co, Mn, Fe, Co and Ni) have been measured by using a photon-helicity-switching method. The method achieves high energy resolution and a low noise-to-signal ratio. The Fe L2,3 absorption spectra of MFe 2 O 4 show a similar spectral profile; on the other hand, the MCD spectra show the characteristic fine structures. These differences are attributed to the variety of 3d electron configuration of Fe ions ( Fe 2+ or Fe 3+) and the local symmetry (tetrahedral or octahedral). Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) of core-level absorption spectra (XAS) in the soft X-ray region has been measured for the ferromagnetic Heusler alloys Co 2 TiSn , Co 2 ZrSn , and Co 2 NbSn . The Co 2p → 3d XAS–MCD spectra show an obvious contribution of the orbital angular momentum component to the magnetic moment in these alloys. The ratio between the orbital and the spin magnetic moments derived from the MCD spectra varies by more than a factor of 2 within these alloys. The mechanism of this variation is discussed in comparison with the band structure calculation.
