Abstract PFAS (per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances) is a complex family of manmade highly fluorinated aliphatic organic chemicals including thousands of chemical structures identified. A research was carried out at a municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWWTP) in Northern Italy to define the inflowing load of PFAS, the main load sources and the removal efficiency of the treatment processes. Then, the 100 industrial settlements served by the MWWTP were examined, and 8 of them were selected as potential PFAS sources. The calculated loads summed up to 98.5 % of the total load entering the plant

Abstract:
Ensuring the stability of slopes is always a challenging problem for geotechnical engineers. Be the slope manmade or natural, unless it is safe under every load condition, it can inflict damage to human life and livelihood. The two basic approaches in slope stability analysis are limit equilibrium method and finite element method. This paper aims to review the effect of various magnitude earthquakes on stability of slopes of different height, slope angle and shear strength parameters using the finite element software PLAXIS. Stability of a slope is best assessed in terms of its factor of safet

The use of structural lightweight concrete in the construction industry is on the rise in the last few decades mainly because of the higher strength per unit density, as it reduces the total deal load of the structural elements as compared with normal strength concrete. In addition, the environmental concerns of the concrete industry have gained supreme importance in recent times, demanding vital and effectual steps. In this regard, the current study was carried out to formulate an alternative approach for producing a sustainable lightweight structural concrete. The study followed two stages:

Two types of tunnel model tests, failure test and constant load creep test, were executed on a manmade soft rock model ground made of a mixture of gypsum and diatom whose mechanical behaviors are very similar to soft sedimentary rock. Meanwhile, finite element analyses based on an elasto-viscoplastic model, which can properly consider the influence of the intermediate principal stress, are conducted to simulate the model tests. The simulated results indicate that the finite element analysis based on a suitable constitutive law can appropriately describe the long-term deformation behavior of tu

<p>Planet Earth is naturally subject to climatic variability, but over the recent decades extreme deviations have been observed. Climate change, as a manmade-induced process, is mainly due to the increase of greenhouse gasses emission. Global warming consequences drive also to an intensification of hydrological cycles, leading to more frequent and severe precipitations. In parallel, several bridges have collapsed in the last years due to extreme rainfalls. Although the impacts of climate change on built environment do not always present a direct cause-effect relation, analysis on specifi
