Transportation accounts for a large proportion of global CO2 emissions, estimated at 22% of all anthropogenically produced CO2 in 2010, with most of this coming from the use of liquid transportation fuels. Second generation biofuels offer a sustainable opportunity to decarbonise this sector of global energy use. To realise the potential of second generation biofuels more efficient methods of deconstructing their lignocellulosic starting material must be developed. A better understanding of wood degradation mechanisms used by Limnoria quadripunctata may lead to the development of more specific treatments to control biodeterioration that have fewer side effects than the traditional broad spectrum biocides. Thus, a clear understanding of digestion in wood boring animals is required. This knowledge of the digestive strategies used by L. quadripunctata could also be applied to the degradation of lignocellulose, and provide a novel source of enzymes which could be used to degrade this recalcitrant substrate. Here, PAH sorption is proposed as the sum of two mechanisms: absorption into a biogenic, organic carbon (OC) fraction and adsorption onto a combustion-derived, black carbon (BC) fraction. To study BC adsorption, a 375ʻC t

Recent expansions of molecular methods and the increasing diversity of available markers have allowed more complex and fine-scale questions to be asked at a variety of taxonomic levels. At the phylogenetic level, whole mitochondrial g

The majority of bacteriophage isolates (96%) are double-stranded DNA tailed phages (Caudovirales). These phages possess a distinctive icosehedral head, with a protein tail structure protruding from a single vertex. This organelle
