Vulnerability is one of the key notions in contemporary sciences and humanities, as well as in the self-understanding of a human being. Sen rectifies the emphasis on income by welfare economics, and argues for the ‘equality of capability’; a goal that he says can be achieved by means of the intrinsic and instrumental role of democracy. In this thesis I distinguish between two conceptions of naturalism that have been offered as possible starting points for a virtue based ethics. The first version of naturalism is characterized by Philippa Foot’s project in Natural Goodness. The second version of naturalism can be found, in various forms, among the works of John McDowell, Martha Nussbaum, and Rosalind Hursthouse. Syftet med denna uppsats är att genom en intertextuell analys identifiera vilka kopplingar som finns mellan Robinson Crusoe och Mr Foe och hur man skulle kunna använda verken i en undervisningskontext utifrån Edward W. Saïds teori om orientalism och intertextuellt perspektiv. Analysen utgår från Edward W. Saïds teori om dikotomier och hur fördomar kan accepteras som sanningar, samt Martha C. Nussbaums teori om beskrivande chauvinism och romantik. I analysen framkommer det att kopplingarna i Mr Foe främst anspelade på Crusoes romantiska bild av ön där han är härskare och Fredag är hans tjänare.
