This thesis develops novel mathematical models to make optimal sequential decisions under uncertainty. One of the main objectives is to scale Markov decision processes, the framework of choice for selecting the best sequential decisions, to larger problems. The thesis is motivated by the management of the invasive tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus across the Torres Strait Islands, an archipelago of islands at the doorstep of the Australian mainland.

This doctoral project is the first comprehensive study of plays about Christian martyrdom on the French stage from 1596 to 1675.1 have compiled a corpus of such tragedies (Appendix). In Chapter One, I argue that such plays should be treated as a characteristic tragic sub-genre, distinct from other forms of religious plays. The aim of this report was to investigate if the number and distribution of sea holly (Eryngium maritimum) on the island of Gotska Sandön in the Baltic sea north of Gotland have, and to explore if there is a link between change in plant habitat and change in number of sea holly individuals on the island. To do so a plant inventory was made in 2021 and compared to a previous inventory that was done in 2009. The number of individuals was counted and the habitat which they grey in was noted. We introduce a theory of contractive Markov systems (CMS) which provides a unifying framework in so-called "fractal" geometry. This thesis examines the appearance, development and use of queer martyrs as they appear in French literature, mainly fiction, during the indicated period. It charts these in relation to two distinct manners of representation used for this leitmotiv. The first, exemplified in Flaubert, approaches it as a vehicle for reconciling divergent, and potentially conflicting philosophies. With the second, observable first in the work of the Belgian Naturalist Georges Eekhoud, the queer martyr becomes a means of asserting a homosexual identity, with chiefly political and pornographic applications.

Two studies were conducted on gene mapping analysis. For the first study, genetic simulation experiments were conducted to address the effects of marker density, method of mapping analysis, and gaps in a marker map on the efficiency of QTL detection and the accuracy of QTL parameter estimation. For many models it is challenging to study the hitting time directly; I present a perturbative approach that allows one to uniformly bound the difference between the hitting time moment generating functions of two Markov chains in a neighbourhood of the origin.
