AbstractWe derive the period (P), primary mass (m1) and mass ratio (q) distributions of the local population of field binaries by studying a volume-limited sample of 371 spectroscopic binaries (SBs) in the solar neighbourhood d ≤ 100 pc and Mv ≤ 4. The sample was collated using the Batten catalogue, data of R.F. Griffin and the Hipparcos catalogue. The SB2s are used to calibrate a Monte-Carlo approach to the q distribution of SB1s, giving a total q distribution confirming a peak at q ≈ 1. Completenesses and parameter-specific biases are also assessed. A substantial number of systems with inter

AbstractLaser interactions with mass-limited targets are studied here via numerical simulations using our relativistic electromagnetic two-dimensional particle-in cell code including all three-velocity components. Analytical estimates are derived to clarify the simulation results. Mass-limited targets preclude the undesirable spread of the absorbed laser energy out of the interaction zone. Mass-limited targets, such as droplets, are shown here to enhance the achievable fast ion energy significantly due to an increase in the hot electron concentration. For given target dimensions, the existence

Wearable motion tracking systems pose an opportunity to study and correct human balance and posture during movement. Currently, these observations are either being conducted in laboratories with the use of camera systems and markers placed on the body, or through the use of suits containing large numbers (15-20) of inertial measurement units. However, to aid with rehabilitation of individuals with impaired balance, there needs to be an option to collect these observations outside of clinics and without incurring much cost from the user. Abstract:
The transport of reactive solutes in the subsurface is influenced by a variety of physical and chemical processes. The processes are characteristically heterogeneous and often operate simultaneously at different temporal and spatial scales. In modeling reactive solute transport different models take different approaches, dependent on the scale of the system and the objective of the study. Two major approaches have been used to incorporate heterogeneous rate-limited mass transfer into mathematical models for solute transport. One focuses on processes operative at the microscopic scale and assoc

The survey is complete within a projected separation range of $56 < a{\rm [AU]} \le 891$, and a companion mass ratio range of $0.05 \le q \le 1.00$, corresponding to the bottom of the Main Sequence for companions to A-type stars. Abstract:
A unit fuel cell with straight gas channels operating in low voltage conditions is considered. Anode electrochemical losses are neglected and a particular, simple form for mass transport limitations to the cathode oxygen reduction electrochemistry is taken and validated with experimental results. With experimentally fitted parameters, it is found that the mass transport limitations dominate the behaviour of the local current density at low voltages. Combined with a simple channel model for oxygen flux, this leads to a description of local current densities independent of cell voltage, assuming
