I present the results of the first volume-limited adaptive optics multiplicity survey of A-type stars. Using high-resolution observations obtained using adaptive optics instruments at five observatories, I have estimated the frequency of binary companions to a sample of 233 A-type stars within 60 parsecs. In this thesis we consider the N=1 super Yang-Mills theory on S5 with a single hypermultiplet in the adjoint representation. We argue that there is a critical value of the hypermultiplet mass M=3/2r, where r is the radius of S5, for which the free energy vanishes, and we study the model in the proximity of this value. For large N we provide analytical results for the free energy and the eigenvalue density in the weak and strong coupling limits, and in one case we solve the saddle point equation using a technique introduced by Hoppe. Lifting the resulting stochastic differential equation to the orthogonal frame bundle, we prove that, as , its solutions converge to solutions of a limiting equation which includes a noise-induced drift term. 20 supernovae that spectroscopically match the peculiar, superluminous type Ia supernova 2003fg are studied in this project. SN2003fg is thought to have erupted at a super-Chandrasekhar mass, thus breaching the theoretical mass limit for a white dwarf. This thesis describes an experiment that has made a new determination of the charged pion mass and from which a new upper limit of the muon neutrino mass has been calculated. The subject of this thesis is high-precision mass-measurements performed with Penning trap mass spectrometers (PTMS). In particular it describes the SMILETRAP I PTMS and the final results obtained with it, the masses of 40Ca and that of the proton. The mass of 40Ca is an indispensible input in the evaluation of measurements of the bound electron g-factor, used to test quantum electrodynamical calculations in strong fields.
