Highlights An experimental machine that combined air classification and mechanical screening was investigated to separate corn grain and stover. Important variables included stover:grain ratio, air velocity, and throughput. As much as 99.4% of the grain could be separated from the stover with less than 1% foreign matter in the grain. Abstract. Corn grain and chopped stover were stored anaerobically at 37% to 50% (w.b.) aggregate moisture content to create a unique biomass feedstock. However, after storage, the two fractions must be separated to accommodate different conversion pathways. In thi

Various problems are experienced during the commercialisation of the ready-made Kefir beverage and, therefore, it is more advantageous to market the grains, enabling the consumer to produce the beverage at home. One of the ways to improve the efficiency of post-harvest processing of grain is the preliminary fractionation of the grain mass, that is, the distribution into fractions for food, seed and fodder purposes. The use of airflows at the initial stage of separation ensures the preliminary formation of grain flows with minimal energy consumption and ensures the receipt of grain for various commodity operations. The high correlation of indicators of the technological properties of the components of the grain material allows the use of airflow at various stages of post-harvest processing of the crop.

Abstract:
Pulses are seeds produced from legumes. More specifically, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) defines pulses as “Leguminosae crops harvested exclusively for their grain, including dry beans, peas and lentils”. This excludes oilseeds, such as soybeans and peanuts. Pulses are well known for their high content of protein and fiber. Most pulses do not contain a lot of oil, and there is not abundant information in the literature on pulse oil triglycerides, or triacylglycerols (TAGs). But pulses are consumed in large quantities in diets around the globe, so even lower am

Abstract:
We present a systematic investigation of computational approaches to the modeling of granular materials. Granular materials are ubiquitous in everyday life and in a variety of engineering and industrial applications. Despite the apparent simplicity of the laws governing particle-scale interactions, predicting the continuum mechanical response of granular materials still poses extraordinary challenges. This is largely due to the complex history dependence resulting from continuous rearrangement of the microstructure of granular material, as well as the mechanical interlocking due to grain morph

Abstract:
The US Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, nourishes gravel downstream of Howard Hanson Dam (HHD) on the Green River in Washington State. The study team developed numerical models to support the ongoing salmonid habitat improvement mission downstream of HHD. Recent advancements in computing and numerical modeling software make long-term simulations in steep, gravel, cobble, and boulder river environments cost effective. The team calibrated mobile-bed, sediment-transport models for the pre-dam and post-dam periods. The modeling explored geomorphic responses to flow and sediment regime ch

Abstract:
Several bitumen samples from AOSTRA's Underground Test Facility were obtained (heat exchanger outlet) in order to characterize the emulsion droplet size distribution and to ultimately establish whether or not high temperature settling could successfully be used to separate the bitumen and water phases. Characterization of the dispersed phase was not straightforward since the samples varied. The samples would sometimes be separated into a large bitumen mass and significant free water and sometimes be quite fluid with dispersed bitumen. It was our opinion that sampling contamination, perhaps wit

Abstract:
The Problem: Abscission is a highly regulated process, occurring as a natural terminal stage of development, in which various organs are separated from the parent plant. In most plant species, the process is initiated by a decrease in active auxin in the abscission zone (AZ) and an increase in ethylene, and may be accelerated by postharvest or environmental stresses. Another potential key regulator in abscission is IDA (Inflorescence Deficient in Abscission), which was identified as an essential peptide signal for floral organ abscission in Arabidopsis. However, information is still lacking re

Innate immune responses in animals and plants involve receptors that recognize microbe-associated molecules. In plants, one set of this defense system is characterized by large families of TIR–nucleotide binding site–leucine-rich repeat (TIR-NBS-LRR) resistance genes. The direct interaction between plant proteins harboring the TIR domain with proteins that transmit and facilitate a signaling pathway has yet to be shown. The Arabidopsis genome encodes TIR-domain containing genes that lack NBS and LRR whose functions are unknown. Here we investigated the functional role of such protein, TLW1 (TI
