AbstractIn some nursings, piglets initiate nose contacts with their mother and emit typical 'croaking' vocalizations. We examined whether the croaking vocalizations reflect the condition of the piglets and whether the sows increase their maternal investments in response to those vocalizations. The following predictions were tested: (i) Piglets with lower weight gain should vocalize more than piglets with higher weight gain; (ii) piglets' milk intake is lower in those nursings in which they vocalize after milk ejection; (iii) piglets make more croaking vocalization in nursings which were preced

Thesis (MCur)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The importance of maintaining maternal wellbeing during the antenatal period is mandatory to the mother and the baby. Although asymptomatic maternal tachycardia could be seen as part of the physiological changes during pregnancy, it could also be a sign of a serious underlying condition. Previous studies have shown that maternal deaths could occur in women with pre-existing cardiac conditions (Naidoo, Desai & Moodley, 2002:17). The concern that many conditions associated with maternal tachycardia pass through the health care s

The findings indicated no significant differences among the age groups in relation to infant birth weight nor in relation to the risk factors of smoking, maternal weight gain, trimester of first entry into prenatal care, or marital status They did indicate a significant difference [F(2,85) = 4.1364, p < .05] between the oldest and the youngest group (CD = 3.37, a = .05) in relation to gestational length. These findings are significant for healthcare providers in rural areas, since much of the previous research had been done in highly urbanized or inner city settings.

Background: Numerous studies have shown the adverse effects of maternal depression, which impacts both mother and child as well as can lower the maternal-fetal attachment. However, during pregnancy, a pregnant woman tends to practice healthier behavior to improve her health and the baby. A gap remains in our understanding of the effect of health behavior as the variable which influences the relationship between depression and maternal-fetal attachment. This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of healthy behavior on the relationship between maternal depression and maternal-fetal att
