In college, mathematics is generally more difficult and complex than ever. This is because the material given is more abstract. Therefore, mathematics and mathematics education students are expected to construct mathematical definitions/concepts independently, to prove logically, and to further develop their mathematical abilities. University educators are often faced with the challenging task of equipping both pre-service and in-service teachers with the knowledge, skills, and resources to effectively teach diverse students. It becomes even more problematic to teach mathematics when using a problem solving approach where mathematical ways of knowing are emphasized. These teachers tend to believe that mathematics is “just numbers,” “speaks a universal language,” is “culturally neutral” and has no relevance whatsoever with social issues that affect students. Coupled with this is the mistaken belief that “people know or do

Abstract Many courses of study in aural skills begin with “basic” musical components such as scales, intervals, and chord identification.1 This chapter proposes a model for the beginning of a curriculum in aural skills that starts with more fundamental concepts and skills and builds—like a mathematics text—on few assumptions and develops each new idea from previously assimilated ones. The curriculum makes no assumptions about prior training in music notation but, rather, relies on certain musical abilities and aptitudes in order to build listeners’ skills and knowledge.
