ABSTRACT We evaluated the performance of a gas chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry method for quantifying 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which the Scientific Committee on Food and the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives have considered to be of concern to human health and used the method to determine the PAH concentrations in smoked foods. Abstract BACKGROUND Minimally invasive therapies for drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) have been advocated. A study of convection-enhanced delivery (CED) of muscimol, a GABAA receptor agonist, was previously completed in non-human primates. OBJECTIVE To investigate the safety and anti-epileptic effects of intracerebral muscimol infusion into the epileptic focus of patients with DRE. METHODS In this phase 1 clinical trial, 3 adult patients with DRE underwent CED into the seizure focus of artificial CSF vehicle followed by muscimol for 12 to 24 h each using a crossover design. Abstract:
Current methods for measuring renal blood flow (RBF) are time consuming and not widely available. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEU) is a safe and noninvasive imaging technique suitable for assessment of tissue blood flow, which has been used clinically to assess myocardial blood flow. We tested the utility of CEU in monitoring changes in RBF in healthy volunteers. We utilized CEU to monitor the expected increase in RBF following a high protein meal in healthy adults. Renal cortical perfusion was assessed by CEU using low mechanical index (MI) power modulation Angio during continuous infusions

Papaya leaves contain several active substances that are thought to inhibit bacterial adhesion. This study aims to determine the inhibitory power of papaya leaf extraction and papaya leaf infusion to the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans bacteria to neutrophils and differences in inhibition in various concentrations. The method used is an in vitro experimental laboratory with a post-test-only control group design. The sample consisted of several concentrations of papaya leaf extraction and papaya leaf infusion (control, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). The treatment group was added with neutrophil iso

A preparation of the bacteriocin lacticin 3147 (prepared from a demineralized whey protein fermentation liquor) was combined as a powder with a bismuth-based intramammary teat seal and evaluated for its potential as an antimicrobial in non-lactating cows. The lacticin/teat seal formulation enabled significant bacteriocin release from the seal without the requirement for a surfactant. Studies in vivo in lactating cows demonstrated that this formulation was effective in reducing bacterial recoveries (~20-fold) from teats deliberately inoculated with Staphylococcus aureus after infusion. Abstract:
In a previous study we showed that under a variety of conditions the feline left ventricle operates at optimum external power. This condition was defined as matching. In the present study matching of left ventricle and systemic arterial tree has been further investigated in the open-thorax cat during control, after volume loading (n = 8), and during norepinephrine infusion (n = 8). The pump-function graph relating mean left ventricular pressure and mean flow was fitted with a parabola characterized by two parameters, the pressure axis and the flow axis intercepts (Pmax and Fmax, respectively).

Introduction Depression is a major cause of disability world-wide. Up to a third of patients have a treatment-resistant form (TRD), presenting a major challenge. Ketamine has been introduced as a novel rapid-acting antidepressant effective in this population. However, at present, ketamine treatment is not routinely informed by any objective neural markers. Basic research has shown promising electroencephalogram (EEG) changes including a decrease in alpha power. Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) are associated with an impaired ability of the β-cell to sense and respond to small changes in plasma glucose. The aim of this study was to establish whether acute hyperglycemia per se plays a role in inducing this defect in β-cell response. Seven healthy volunteers with no family history of NIDDM were studied on two occasions during a 12-h oscillatory glucose infusion with a periodicity of 144 min. Once, low-dose glucose was infused at a mean rate of 6 mg · kg−1 · min−1 and amplitude 33% above and below the m

Modern naval missions rely increasingly on a complex array of electronic systems for a variety of functions including communications, sensing, weaponry, and countermeasures, greatly increasing the power requirements for future ships. To meet these needs, ships are transitioning to more electric architectures and require the infusion of new technologies. Since technology development resources are often limited, it is vital to intelligently choose the most promising designs to invest in. However, this type of decision-making is not necessarily straightforward. Firstly, the ship itself is a highl
