Every material is structured in its unique way and has its own recognizable microstructure. There are a number of approaches in establishing the relationship between mechanical properties and microstructure of a material, but none of them is universal and correlation free, probably because of luck of attention to the sub-grain structure. The possibility of calculating the hardness number using only geometric sizes of microstructural formations is discussed in this paper, where the grain is meant to be a container of the two most frequently occurred shapes in the microstructures globula and lam

Abstract Metal additive manufacturing (AM) allows for the freeform creation of complex parts. However, AM microstructures are highly sensitive to the process parameters used. Resulting microstructures vary significantly from typical metal alloys in grain morphology distributions, defect populations and crystallographic texture. AM microstructures are often anisotropic and possess three-dimensional features. These microstructural features determine the mechanical properties of AM parts. Abstract:
Transport mechanisms, such as mass and heat transfer, are critical to the efficiency and the reliability of nuclear fuels such as uranium oxide. These properties can be significantly affected by the microstructure of the material. This paper looks into the effects of grain boundary (GB) Kapitza resistance on the overall heat conductivity of UO2 using a 3-D finite element model with microstructurally explicit information. The model developed is created with a 3-D reconstruction of the microstructure of depleted uranium samples performed using serial sectioning techniques with Focused Ion Beam (

Abstract:
In nature, ice frequently contains dissolved solutes or entrapped particles, which modify the microstructure and mechanical properties of ice. Seeking to understand the effect of particle shape and geometry on the mechanical properties of ice, we performed experiments on ice containing 15 wt% silica spheres or rods. Unique to this work was the use of 3-D microstructural imaging in a -10ºC cold room during compressive loading of the sample. The silica particles were present in the ice microstructure as randomly dispersed aggregates within grains and at grain boundaries. While cracks originated

Abstract:
The focus in the present study was to establish whether there is a reasonable correlation between the Charpy Vee Notch (CVN) toughness and the non-destructive Potential Difference (PD) measurements of ferritic-pearlitic steels having a range of CVN toughness values. Complete material characterization was carried out for six steels procured for this program. The characterization included chemical analysis, microstructural information, tensile properties and CVN transition curves. In addition, most of the data including the CVN transition curves were available for five suitable pipe line steels
