The equilibrium phase behaviour of ternary mixtures of water, oil and surfactants is examined using both a lattice-gas model and a Ginzburg-Landau model. The lattice model is based on the Blume-Capel model with additional orientational degrees of freedom for surfactants, and the Ginzburg-Landau model is based on two local scalar fields. When the concentrations of water and oil are equal the following phases are observed: a water and oil rich phase, a lamellar phase, and a disordered phase which is divided into an ordinary disordered fluid and a microemulsion region. Dissolved air flotation (DAF) is a separation technique, often used after a primary gravity separator to enhance the quality of the wastewater, so it can be released to streams, rivers, and the sea in a manner not to violate the environment. DAF works by removing oil droplets from oil-in-water mixtures by air bubbles of an average diameter of 50 μm with a standard deviation of 5.5 μm. The air bubbles used in these experiments were generated as a result of rapid pressure reduction of water saturated with air when it released from the bottom of the DAF tank. This thesis reports the properties of bio-oil-based fuel mixtures. For bioslurry fuels, the interaction between biochar and bio-oil results in changes in fuel properties and the redistribution of inorganic species. For glycerol/methanol/bio-oil (GMB) fuel blends, the solubility and fuel properties are improved upon methanol addition but other impurities in crude glycerol worsen the solubility with limited impact on properties. It is also possible to integrate the GMB blends production into the biodiesel production process.

Abstract:
This thesis reports the fuel properties and thermal processing of bio-oil derived fuel mixtures. Biochar loading level affects fuel properties and ignition behavior of slurry fuels prepared from crude glycerol/methanol/bio-oil (CGMB) blends and biochar, while exhibits little effect on cold flow behavior. Crude glycerol (CG) improves the ignition and cold flow behavior of slurry fuels while has limited effect on fuel properties. Interactions between sugar and lignin-derived oligomers contribute bed agglomeration during bio-oil fast pyrolysis.

While friction reduces engine efficiency, oil consumption can poison exhaust aftertreatment systems. The primary method in studying the balance between friction and oil consumption is by understanding and modeling oil transport. Fried foods are delicious and enjoyed by almost everyone. However, they are not the healthiest foods to eat because of the amount of oil they contain. This thesis, sponsored by Moaero Company founder, Mr. Harrish Bhutani, intends to determine whether a simply designed centrifuge system can remove a reasonable amount of oil from fried foods after it has been deep fried without adversely affecting the texture of the fried food. Due to a large variety in the texture as well as the type of fried foods, and in order to keep the scope of this thesis more focused and feasible, the focus of this inves

Though the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN recommends an annual intake of 9.6 liters of dietary fats a year per person, some areas of Africa consume only about 1.5 liters annually. Many members of these communities lack the resources to purchase imported edible oils; lo

These sealing systems present a unique challenge in controlling the lubricant supply and flow in the contact areas in order to minimize leakage, friction, and wear. Due to the sealing requirement, the minimum oil film thickness is in the order of surface roughn
