This report includes research into how to automate a small scale system for hydroponics. Hydroponics is a growing technique which features a soil-less environment were the plants roots are exposed to a nutrient-enriched water solution. The research focused mainly on how to regulate the pH and the level of nutrient in the water solvent and finding a system to automate that process. In the research fully grown basil plants were used as test specimens, with the plants roots submerged in a water solvent. Abstract:
The interest in the research and development of humanoid robots has been steadily growing in recent years. The application of such robotic systems are many and wide. In this bachelor’s thesis in mechatronics one such robotic system was built in the form of a hand. The aim was to investigate how well the robotic hand could imitate the movements of a user-worn controller glove as well as grip objects, both through wireless communication. The controller glove consisted of an Arduino Nano microcontroller, five flex sensors, an inertial measurement unit that detected the wrist rotation of the glove

This projects purpose was to build an underwater remote operated vehicle with software controlled self-stabilisation for evaluation of the response time, propulsion and steering to see what could be achieved. A prototype was constructed and tested in dry conditions at first. The prototype features an Arduino and a Raspberry Pi as control units, controlling six thrusters. With the help of a controller the user can manoeuvre the vehicle and when exposed to unexpected forces sensors detect this allowing the software to counteract it. This thesis explored the possibility to use line following technology to automate forklifts in a warehouse scenario. This was done to reduce the need for staff to always be present in the warehouse. A prototype forklift was constructed with three wheels, where driving and steering was done by the rear wheel. To control the forklift an Arduino Uno was used. The line following was done using Infrared Radiation (IR) sensors. Different setups of line following sensors were tested to achieve a forklift capable of following a line. Different layouts of the operating area were also tested. Line follo

The purpose of this thesis was to create a robot that through the use of visual recognition and robotics could play chess. The idea for this project came from the fact that there is an increasing demand for smart robots that can make their own decisions in a changing environment, and the fact that chess has recently seen a surge of new players. The optimal design of the arm making the moves was decided to be of SCARA type, which is a common robotic arm that excels in pick-and-place operations. The movement of the arm was driven by two stepper motors connected to a Raspberry Pi and an external p

Modern systems utilize multiple transceiver modules to enhance capacity by directing the energy of the basestation only at the desired directions using beamforming algorithms. To accurately control the beam patterns, the phase and amplitude at each antenna port must be manipulated to follow the desired beam weight response. In a real system electrical, mechanical, and thermal variations for each antenna port path introduces different amplitude and phase errors. To ensure the desired performance, calibration at the antenna ports must be performed. The distinct transmit and receive frequencies i

The aim of this master thesis was to create automated system tests on airborne radar systems. Automated tests can reduce time spent on repetitive and monotone work and instead create time for exploratory testing and customer criteria testing. Nightly builds and well designed tests can improve robustness and create a more stable system for the user. The project started with a pre-study, which consisted of researching the system in question, researching the possibilities of automated tests on said system and different tools that could be used in the project. Flexible assembly systems have emerged in response to changing markets and increased variety in form of demands of new products and manufacturer’s need for differentiation. Assembly systems play a critical role in handling great variety and adapting to dynamic changes at the same time as securing product quality and productivity. Therefore, assembly systems should be designed to be able to handle changes. However, the design of flexible assembly systems is a challenge because it involves several subjects such as the configuration of the flow, the material handling and the flexibility to handle

How can we improve the living standards of the visually impaired using an Arduino? Living with visual impairment could potentially be one of the hardest things one could do. Constantly having to worry about obstacles and carrying a stick to feel your way forward. In order to combat this difficulty, we have designed Vision for the Blind. One of the usages of ultrasonic sensors are to measure the distance from objects using sound waves. These sensors, in combination with Piezo buzzers, have been used in Vision for the Blind to warn the user of incoming obstacles by emitting sound from the buzzer

Despite advances in Deep Reinforcement Learning, multi-agent systems remain somewhat unexplored, in comparison to single-agent systems, with few clear conclusions. In order to investigate this, two algorithms have been implemented and tested on a simple multi-agent system: Deep Q Learning with several improvements (EDQN) and Asynchronous Advantage ActorCritic (A3C). The result shows that with an increasing number of agents, learning a well performing policy takes more time. When only a few agents are used, the performance of both algorithms when fully trained is similar and could be viewed as

In this project a recommendation system for suggesting movies is implemented, in the field of Collaborative Filtering (CF). The system is created with a Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM), which is a two-layer neural network. The main tool used for programming the RBM is the TensorFlow library, imported to Python. The performance of the system is evaluated with Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE) where the error between the observed movie ratings and the predicted ratings is computed. This study shows how different parameters of the RBM, e.g. number of hidden units, mini-batch size, epochs and lear
