This practice-led PhD contributes to an understanding of contemporary art practice as a tool to render visible and unravel capitalist imaginaries within the field of migration studies. Focusing on the theme of contemporary and historical migrations at Cape Town through research conducted on three ships between 2013 and 2017, it uses the themes of ‘time’, ‘space’ and ‘memory’ to visualise migrations. The PhD interrogates the hidden process of globalisation; the invisibility of the workings of the port; the invisibility of the workers; their stories and their connection to the movement of capita

The Reformation had exposed ideas of female religiosity, ridiculing the contested site of the gendered bodies of nuns. Nevertheless, memories of pre-Reformation religion could not be easily destroyed. Nuns and nunneries are memorialised in a range of early modern English texts, among which this thesis identifies a number of tropes featuring nuns in historiography and drama. The first two chapters examine works by authors with differing agendas, John Foxe and Raphael Holinshed (Chapter 1), and John Stow and William Dugdale (Chapter 2), which can be regarded as memory banks of nun tropes. This thesis is an ethnographic account of ancient Greek drama performances that take place in contemporary Greece. It illuminates an aspect of them that has not been taken into account until today: it treats them as commemorative ceremonies that produce, reproduce, and transmit social memory. The interrelation and interdependence between social memory and ethnic identity construction processes are analysed and it is shown that ancient drama performances, due to specific characteristics, constitute something more than mere theatrical events (as they are defined within the Western tradition). Abstract:
A DRAM communicates with a processing unit via two interfaces: a data interface and a command interface. In today's DRAMs, also known as synchronous DRAMs (SDRAMs), both interfaces use a clock to communicate with the processing unit. The clock times the communication between the processing unit and the SDRAM on both the data interface and the command interface. We propose a self-timed DRAM. The self-timed DRAM introduces more flexibility into the DRAM interface by eliminating the clock. The command interface and the data interface each communicate with the processing unit using a handshake pro

Increasing demand for high-density memories has necessitated the search for new materials with higher dielectric constants to satisfy the minimum charge storage density requirements. Several materials such as Ta₂O₅, BST¹, BBT² are being investigated to replace the currently used Si based oxide/nitride dielectrics. Among the materials under investigation, Ta₂O₅ is one of the most promising, especially from the fab compatibility point of view. Ta₂O₅ thin films offer a six-fold increase in dielectric constant compared to conventional dielectrics. However, the significant improvement in dielectric

Abstract:
Memory wall is one of the major performance bottlenecks in modern computer systems. SRAM caches have been used to successfully bridge the performance gap between the processor and the memory. However, SRAM cache’s latency is inversely proportional to its size. Therefore, simply increasing the size of caches could result in negative impact on performance. To solve this problem, modern processors employ multiple levels of caches, each of a different size, forming the so called memory hierarchy. Upon a miss, the processor will start to lookup the data from the highest level (L1 cache) to the lowe

Nuclear particles hitting the silicon in a electronic device can cause a change in the data in a memory bit cell or in a flip-flop. The device is still working, but the data is corrupted and this is called a soft error. A soft error caused by a single nuclear particle is called a single event upset and is a growing problem. Research is ongoing at Saab aiming at how susceptible random access memories are to protons and neutrons.

This thesis describes the development of equipment for measuring cosmic-ray effects on DRAM in laboratories. Abstract:
Large dense structures like DRAMs (Dynamic Random Access Memory) are particularly susceptible to process variation, which can lead to variable latencies in different memory arrays. However, very little work exists on variation studies in DRAMs. This is due to the fact that DRAMs were traditionally placed off-chip and their latency changes due to process variation did not impact the overall processor performance. However, emerging technology trends like three-dimensional integration, use of sophisticated memory controllers, and continued scaling of technology node, substantially reduce DRAM acc

This study developed after considerable time spent collating and cataloguing data contained in Ronald Duncan's archive. Familiarisation with the material led to my identifying a need to explore the elusive nature of the personality that biographical material should hope to uncover. Duncan was prone to mainly confessional writing, a kind of writing that demands a causal inference between life and work. Furthermore, the archive supplies multiple data sources that serve to aid chronology, trace reliability, provide external corroboration and investigate truth-value. My study follows a loosely chr
