In the year AD 431 the Council of Ephesus anathematized the ‘Messalians’ (Syriac) or ‘Euchites’ (Greek) – both terms meaning ‘those who pray’ – referring to them as ‘impious’ and ‘contaminating’. A defining characteristic of this group was their emphasis on constant prayer. The Messalian phenomenon, which originated in Syria and Mesopotamia, spread to Armenia and Asia Minor during the late fourth century, causing concern amongst the ecclesiastical hierarchy of many areas. In condemning the movement in AD 431 the Council of Ephesus confirmed the judgement of the synods of Antioch (c. 380) and S

In a letter to the monk Patricius, Philoxenus told a cautionary tale about the downfall of the monk Adelphius. He was said to have accepted a Satanic vision of the Holy Spirit, abandoned ascetic labour and become the founder of the heresy of the ‘Messalians’. This article places Philoxenus’ account against the longer background of the invention of ‘Messaliainism’, and in particular of Adelphius as Messalian heresiarch. It shows how Philoxenus drew on traditions about monks receiving Satanic visions found in ascetic literature. It also demonstrates that Philoxenus’ story reflected polemical cla

This paper discusses the use of the names of heresies: bogomilism, messalianism and the heresy of autoproscoptae in 14th century Bulgarian sources. The author underlines that the names of bogomilism and messalianism do not always refer to dualism. Two wider unknown examples of such use of the name “messalinism” are recalled. In the Pseudo-Zonaras Nomocanon (CIAI 1160), the name “messalianism” is treated as being equal to the “heresy of autoproscoptae”. In the Rule for hermits, messalians are presented not as heretics, but as monks disregarding their rules.

At the same time, using the hagiographical sources about Joseph Volotsky allows us to suggest that these contacts did exist in the form of exchanging letters, and some books at the Volotsk Monastery library, judging

Abstract:
Abstract The history of the Messalian controversy up to 431 can be divided into three phases. First, there is the emergence into public view of groups labelled as ‘Messalian’, described in sources datable to the 370s. It should be noted at the outset that the term ‘Messalian’ will be used in this study below when and as it appears in the sources, without suggesting a uniform taxonomy for all groups labelled as such. During the initial period these ‘Messalians’ were active in Mesopotamia, perhaps particularly in Osrhoene. Second, there are condemnations of Messalian ideas and leaders by local councils c.380-90. The trial of a Messalian leader at Antioch is the major event noted in the sources, but there is also clear evidence of the spread of people and ideas described as Messalian to Armenia and Pamphylia. Third, in the 420s and 430s there is the most intense period of anti-Messalian activity, directed by Asian bishops and ratified at the highest levels of ecclesiastical authority.

Abstract:
Abstract The preceding study has sketched the convergence of various ways of approaching the causes and early history of the Messalian controversy. The approaches converge upon the world of Syriac Christianity. The reinterpretation of the historical and geographical evidence leaves little doubt about the origins of the people or movements labelled ‘Messalian’ and condemned for doctrinal and behavioural deviations from orthodox norms. Whoever they were, whatever may have been the names of their principal teachers, however they may have lived, the ‘Messalians’ and the controversy which followed them were an irruption into the Hellenistic world of ascetical practices and imagistic language far more characteristic of Syriac Christianity than of the imperial Church centred on Constantinople. The charges brought against them about their way of life are not particularly unusual; other groups were accused of similar faults. The doctrinal points made against them, however, are distinctive, and the various anti-Messalian lists demonstrate a continuity of issues and, particularly, of language. It has been seen that this language, used to describe religious experience, itself points to Syriac Christianity.

The theology of the earliest quranic layers displays a puzzling characteristic: it is overtly binitarian. Through the interplay and alignment of quranic discourse analysis, structuralist-Marxist epistemology, and Lacanian psychoanalysis, Segovia uncovers the most plausible historical setting of the early binitarian theology of the Qur’ān in light of the east-Syrian monastic crisis of the early seventh century and the role played in it by the Messalians.

Abstract Polybius controlled the letters but Pallas controlled the money. Pallas was the most powerful freedman at Claudius’s court, vastly wealthy, proud of his reputation for virtue, prickly about any contradiction suggested between these two. Pallas was increasingly a person of suspicion to Messalina, too close, she thought, to Agrippina, the most direct descendent of Augustus still alive. Agrippina and the former slave were lovers, it was also said, a smear against each of them, the same smear by which the empress had put Seneca on a beach in Corsica. Lucius took the contrary side, the side of the established power. That was his way. There was never a suggestion that Messalina and Lucius were lovers although her slipper was often in his hand, ostentatiously kissed, to show whose side he was on – until Messalina’s fall and murder.
