Background: Obesity and metabolic disorders as type 2 diabetes (T2D), nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) or better called metabolic dysfunction fatty liver disease (MAFLD), arterial hypertension (AHT), and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) show a rising prevalence. The increased cardiovascular risk is one of the main causes for death of obese, metabolic ill patients. Sustainable and efficient therapeutic options are needed. Summary: Metabolic surgery not only permits a substantial and lasting weight loss but also ameliorates metabolic co-morbidities and reduces cardiovascular risk

Metabolic impairments play an important role in the development and progression of heart failure. The use of metabolic modulators, the number of which is steadily increasing, may be particularly effective in the treatment of heart failure. Recent evidence suggests that modulating cardiac energy metabolism by reducing fatty acid oxidation and/or increasing glucose oxidation represents a promising approach to the treatment of patients with heart failure. This review focuses on the role of metabolic modulators, in particular trimetazidine, as a potential additional medication to conventional medi

Chronic wounds represent an under-acknowledged socioeconomic epidemic, affecting 1.8 million new patients per year and costing the US health care system upwards of $25 billion annually. This substantial cost is rapidly growing due to a disproportionate occurrence in the ever-aging population. Key features associated with age-related impairment of wound healing include limited energy and nutrient exchange, unremitting inflammations, increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), and diminished blood flow. Most chronic wound therapies target specific molecular mechanisms; however, there are often mult

It has long been thought that the only hormone capable of reversing the catabolic consequences of diabetes is insulin. However, various studies have demonstrated that the adipocyte-derived hormone leptin can potently lower blood glucose levels in rodent models of insulin-deficient diabetes. In addition, the hormone glucagon is elevated in type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and glucagon suppression therapy has shown promise as an agent to treat diabetes in mice. Given the interest in both of these therapies, leptin treatment and glucagon antagonism were propelled into clinical trials for patients with

Expanding world hunger calls for increasing available food resources. Ruminants have the remarkable ability to convert human-indigestible plant biomass into human-digestible food products, due to a complex microbiome residing in the rumen compartment of their upper digestive tract. One way to tackle the problem of diminishing food resources is to increase the animals' energetic efficiency, i.e., the efficiency with which they convert energy from feed, thereby increasing food availability while lowering the environmental burden, as these animals would produce more and eat less.
