Using a fully vectorial formulation, the normal mode analysis method is used to model for what is believed to be the first time, the radiative spreading of surface plasmon-polariton modes input into regions where the bound surface mode is cutoff, or radiative. The analysis was performed at lambda = 1.55mum for embedded infinite-width slabs and finite-width strip metal waveguides where the metal was Au and the surrounding dielectrics were SiO 2 and LiNbO3. A novel type of parabolic trough collector was characterised using a very basic theoretical model. This model looked at an ideal case and provided a basic expectation that was compared to actual measurements. The model showed that greater improvements can be achieved if heat losses to the environment are limited or omitted. Thesis (M.Sc.) -- University of Limpopo, 2005<br>Six aerobic bacterial strains [GM 10(1), GM 10 (2), GM 14, GM 15, GM 16 and GM 17] were isolated from an antimony mine in South Africa. Heavy-metal resistance and biosorptive capacities of the isolates were studied. Three of the isolates (GM 15, GM 16 and GM 17) showed different degrees of resistance to antimony and arsenic oxyanions in TYG media. The most resistant isolate GM 16 showed 90 % resistance, followed by GM 17 showing 60 % resistance and GM 15 was least resistant showing 58 % resistance to 80 mM arsenate (AsO4 3-). GM 15 also

Heavy metals, such as copper and cadmium have been linked to a number of cellular dysfunctions in single and multicellular organisms that are associated with apoptosis. The yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, provides a valuable model for elucidating apoptosis mechanisms, and this study extends that capability to Cu and Cd-induced apoptosis. Transgender people, a minority population, are at increased risk for negative health and mental health consequences. Profound societal discrimination and stigmatization lead to systemic institutional barriers and lack of access to health care services. Abstract:

The objective of this investigation was to determine the influence of work roll cooling on roll thermal behavior. The investigation has been conducted utilizing a previously developed computer model [1]. Three industrial operations were evaluated and features of an optimum configuration have been identified. The magnitude of the thermal zone near the roll surface within which the cyclic temperature variation is confined has been evaluated for different roll cooling conditions.
