Abstract:
The electron density function of molecular systems supplies a package of information. Quantum mechanical methods of producing and analyzing this function have been significantly improved during the past few years. The advent of accurate pseudopotentials and corresponding basis sets for Kohn-Sham density functional and for post-Hartree-Fock electron-correlated approaches have enabled the inclusion of scalar relativistic and spin-orbit coupling effects as well as electron correlation effects into the electron density function. The unpacking of the information embedded in such a function via the

Antibiotic resistance profiles of fecal coliform isolated from unchlorinated and chlorinated secondary effluent were determined. Of 332 fecal coliforms isolated from chlorinated effluent a mean of 48% were multiply antibiotic resistant. In contrast, of 347 fecal coliforms isolated from unchlorinated effluent a mean of 29% were multiply antibiotic resistant. Resistance to ampicillin, cephalothin, and carbenicillin were significantly higher in the former than the latter. Randomly selected isolates survived and/or grew in sterile and unsterile effluent retaining resistance patterns for 40 days. R

Abstract:
The photocatalytic oxidation of trichloroethylene (TCE), ethylene. ethane and toluene on TiO2, Pt/TiO2 and Ag/TiO2 were investigated in a dedicated reactor set-up operated at room temperature and ambient pressure condition. The gas phase experiments were carried out for both single and binary mixtures of these chemicals to identify the role of Pt and Ag metallisation in the photocatalytic oxidation of different contaminants. In a single contaminant system, the presence of Pt enhanced the oxidation of ethylene, ethane and toluene but detrimental to the oxidation of TCE. In the oxidation of ethy

Abstract:
Fundamental understanding of atmospheric corrosion mechanisms requires an in-depth understanding on the dynamic interaction between corrosive constituents and metal/alloy surfaces. This doctoral study comprises field and laboratory investigations that assess atmospheric corrosion and metal release processes for two different groups of alloys exposed in chloride-rich environments. These groups comprise two commercial Zn-Al alloy coatings on steel, Galfan™ (Zn5Al) and Galvalume™ (Zn55Al), and four copper-based alloys (Cu4Sn, Cu15Zn, Cu40Zn and Cu5Zn5Al). In-depth laboratory investigations were c
