Abstract:
In A Compendium of the Characteristics of Categories (Padārthadharmasaṃgraha) the classical Vaiśeṣika philosopher Praśastapāda (6th century ce) presents an innovative metaphysics of the self. This article examines the defining metaphysical and axiological features of this conception of self and the dualist categorial schema in which it is located. It shows how this idea of the self, as a reflexive and ethical being, grounds a multinaturalist view of natural order and offers a conception of agency that claims to account for all the reflexive features of human mental and bodily life. Finally, it

Abstract:
Grounding is commonly assumed to induce a strict partial ordering: it is said to be asymmetric, transitive and irreflexive. Why it is that we ought to believe that grounding is irreflexive, in particular, appears to turn in large part on the impossibility of any instance of it being reflexive. But why is this? Indeed, how would things need to be such that anything could ground itself? And why is this so bad? This paper explores metaphysical and explanatory reasons for supposing that nothing can ground itself. The discussion centers on the thoughts that there are problems with bootstrapping, th

Abstract This volume examines the interplay of time, tense, and genre in ancient Greek literature, showing how these elements function as part of a dynamic, interconnected system. Through multivocal and reflexive analysis, it offers fresh perspectives on how texts reflect, construct, and challenge cultural conceptions of time. The book is structured to explore the relationship between philosophical time and literary time, with chapters arranged into three sections that correspond to the earliest questions asked by Greek philosophers: how do humans relate to gods (Metaphysics)? Abstract:
Whether inspired by the Frankfurt School or Antonio Gramsci, the impact of critical theory on the study of international relations has grown considerably since its advent in the early 1980s. This book offers the first intellectual history of critical international theory. Richard Devetak approaches this history by locating its emergence in the rising prestige of theory and the theoretical persona. As theory’s prestige rose in the discipline of international relations it opened the way for normative and metatheoretical reconsiderations of the discipline and the world. The book traces the lines
