Abstract:

The paper examines Othello as metapoetry. Throughout the play, key points of comparison between Iago and Shakespeare's methodologies for employing allegory, symbolism, and mimetic plot and character construction shed light upon Shakespeare's self-reflexive use of poetry as an art of imitation. More specifically, the contrast between Shakespeare and Iago's poetry delineates between dynamic and reductive uses of allegory, emphasizes an Aristotelian model of mimesis that makes reason integral to plot and character formation, and underscores an ethical function to poetry generally. Abstract:

Em janeiro de 2009, o poeta português Herberto Helder publica a segunda versão dA faca não corta o fogo e que constitui o livro de encerramento da antologia mais recente, Ofício Cantante- poesia completa. Pretendemos então selecionar e analisar alguns poemas desta obra epilogal, problematizando a busca da unidade entre as coisas em matéria de poesia, projeto poético situado num horizonte histórico da mais exacerbada fragmentação. Mesmo sabendo não atingi-la definitivamente, tal busca funciona como mote ou motor que impulsiona a poesia herbertiana, levando-a a reverenciar a linguagem analógica.

This study seeks to renew interest in the poetically constructed landscapes of Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Far from existing as mere background to the epic, close investigation and analysis reveals the reflective relationship and mutually exerted force between landscape and narrative. The question of the Metamorphoses’ genre has largely been replaced by analyses of how the various genres react against each other within the hexameter framework of the poem. How Ovid instructs his reader to see how he breaks down strict generic divisions within the poem is, I shall argue, explicated by the literary symbolism in the most extensive single story in the poem, that of Phaethon’s destructive commandeering of the Sun’s chariot (Met. 1. 748-2. 400). This study explores how the poetry of Else Lasker-Schüler (1869-1945) creates a personal space—a Heimat—through the poetic process. Through close readings of a selection of the poet’s works, I demonstrate the paradoxical relationship between physical structures and emotional or psychic freedom. I show how this association between form and fluidity reflects the poetic genre itself, while also drawing parallels to Lasker-Schüler’s biography and her relationships with the Berliner Bohème.
