Abstract The complexity of biological systems creates challenges for fully understanding their behaviour. This is particularly true for cell migration which requires the co-ordinated activity of hundreds of individual components within cells. Mathematical modelling can help understand these complex systems by breaking the system into discrete steps which can then be interrogated in silico. In this review, we highlight scenarios in cell migration where mathematical modelling can be applied and discuss what types of modelling are most suited. Almost any aspect of cell migration is amenable to ma

Migration models have evolved significantly during the last decade, most notably the so-called flow Fixed-Effects (FE) gravity models. Such models attempt to infer how human mobility may be driven by changing economy, geopolitics, and the environment among other things. They are also increasingly used for migration projections and forecasts. However, recent research shows that this class of models can neither explain, nor predict the temporal dynamics of human movement. This shortcoming is even more apparent in the context of forced migration, in which the processes and drivers tend to be hete

Cell migration is of crucial importance for many physiological processes, including embryonic development, wound healing and immune response. Defects in cell migration are the cause of chronic in ammatory diseases, mental retardation and cancer metastasis. Cell movement is driven by actin-mediated cell protrusion, substrate adhesion and contraction of the cell body. The emergent behaviour of the intracellular processes described above is a change in the morphology of the cell. This inspires the main hypothesis of this work which is that there is a measurable relationship between cell morpholog

Abstract:
The Siple Coast ice streams are long, narrow bands of ice within the Antarctic ice sheet. They move significantly faster than the surrounding ice ridges, and therefore discharge significantly more ice. Observations suggest that their fast flow is due to sliding along a water-saturated bed, while the bed of the neighbouring ridges generally appears to be frozen. The ice stream velocities and widths vary on decadal to centennial time scales, and these variations include the migration of the ice stream margins, where the fast flow slows down to the speed of the surrounding ice. In this thesis a new method is proposed to estimate major periods of migration from one region into another using phased, non-recombined sequence data from the present. The assumption is made that migration occurs in multiple waves and that during each migration period, a number of sequences, called `founder sequences', migrate into the new region. It is first shown through appropriate simulations based on the structured coalescent that previous inferences based on the idea of founder sequences sufer from the fundamental problem that it is assumed that migration events coincide with the nodes

Collective cell migration is a fundamental process, occurring during embryogenesis and cancer metastasis. Neural crest cells exhibit such coordinated migration, where aberrant motion can lead to fatality or dysfunction of the embryo. Migration involves at least two complementary mechanisms: contact inhibition of locomotion (a repulsive interaction corresponding to a directional change of migration upon contact with a reciprocating cell), and co-attraction (a mutual chemoattraction mechanism). The thesis explores three different types of models to understand collective cell migration of the neu

Abstract An improved mathematical technique has been developed for the numerical simulation of the incubation period of crevice corrosion. The model utilizes an iterative fully-implicit finite difference method coupled with a modified fractional- step decoupling technique to solve the mass transport section of the model. This produces an unconditionally stable algorithm permitting time step considerations to be centered around the desired accuracy of the solution. All chemical equilibria are solved simultaneously by the use of a multiple Newton-Raphson technique. Two test cases were explored.
