The contribution of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to mineral weathering was investigated under the changing Eh and pH conditions in three subarctic fens, near Schefferville, Quebec. This study aimed to obtain a better understanding on the mechanisms and controls of mineral–organic matter (OM) interactions across a range of soil types and land uses. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to evaluate sorption capacity of different organic carbon (OC) compounds on pure minerals and their interaction mechanisms were determined by infrared spectroscopy. Role of mineralogy on the dynamics of soil OM pools was assessed in four cropped soils with contrasting mineralogy by sequential density fractionation and chemical treatments. Soils play a significant role in the movement of Dissolved Organic Carbon (DOC) within a catchment and are a major source of DOC to surface waters. Recent DOC increases in some surface waters in Europe and North America could be indicative of changes in soils leading to greater export of DOC. Organo-mineral soils have the ability to act as both sources and sinks for DOC due to the presence of a large organic layer as well as mineral horizon(s). The associated NOM has been found to influence the Fe(II)-catalyzed ferrihydrite transformation pathway, but it remains unclear how various NOM affects this transformation and the implication. Further knowledge of these mechanisms is thus fundamental to promote effective C sequestration practices in terrestrial sinks, as recognized by Article 3.4 of the Kyoto Protocol. Abstract:
Geophysical and geological data collected during cruises conducted on the lowermost Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers from 1999 through 2004 investigated the seasonal storage patterns of fine-grained sediment and the associated terrestrial organic carbon (TOC). We found that in the estuarine section of the Mississippi River, storage was dominated by estuarine trapping associated with salt-water wedge intrusion, with rapid rates of accumulation (mm-cm/day), whereas the Atchafalaya showed little wedge intrusion or storage due to the presence of un-dredged river-mouth bars.
