Background: The epidemic of childhood obesity is of increasing public health concern, with major implications for long-term health. Prevention strategies are urgently needed. Most of the evidence concerning risk factors for childhood obesity comes from observational studies, mainly from Western populations. In the West, socio-economic position (SEP) is often associated with potential risk factors and with childhood obesity, making these observational studies open to residual confounding. Evidence from a setting with a different confounding structure can be valuable in disentangling whether ass

Objectives. To study infant care practices and lifestyle choices of Aboriginal mothers and a comparison group. Relevance. To help formulate preventive strategies for sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) in Aboriginal infants. Methods. A two part design was used. Sixteen in-depth interviews with mothers of infants were completed and analysed using qualitative methods. Recurrent patterns in infant care practices, the language used to describe infant care, and sources of infant care information were sought. These data were used to construct a standardized survey tool, and to provide additional co

Abstract:
Colorectal cancer is the third most diagnosed cancer and second leading cause of cancer related deaths in Canada. As Ontario has the largest population in Canada, it also has great disparities in colorectal cancer incidence. The region of Timiskaming has the highest incidence for colorectal cancer, while the region of Peel has the lowest incidence for colorectal cancer in Ontario. The purpose of this study is to identify the dominant non-nutritional modifiable environmental risk factors in the region of Timiskaming compared to the region of Peel that may be associated with diverging colorectal

Background: Vitamin D may be important in the causal pathway to breast cancer (BC) by influencing mammographic breast density (MD). However, previous study results in postmenopausal women are inconsistent. Study objectives were to prospectively examine the relationship between biomarkers of vitamin D (25-OH-D) and percent MD in postmenopausal women at northern latitudes. Potential effect modification by exemestane therapy, calcium or genetic polymorphisms in the vitamin D pathway was also examined. Methods: This study evaluated a sub-cohort of postmenopausal women at elevated BC risk who part

These findings are not surprising if viewed in the light that most people consider physical activity not to be a priority in their daily activities. During the last decade, it would seem that employers have realised that the health status of an employee can have a direct influence on productivity, efficiency and absenteeism in the working environment. In an attempt to lower health-related costs, reduce absenteeism and improve productivity, some employers have started i

Background: This dissertation comprises research conducted on two distinct projects. Project I focuses on the connection between household air pollution (HAP) from cooking with biomass fuels and blood pressure (BP); this research is situated in the context of a large randomized trial of a cookstove intervention in Ghana, West Africa. The setting of Project II, meanwhile, is the residential environment of New York City, where we explore temperature and humidity conditions in homes and relate these conditions to summertime heat wave risk and to the survival and transmission of respiratory viruse
