Abstract:
In this paper, rectangular multi-Gaussian Schell-model (MGSM) array beams, which consists N×D beams in rectangular symmetry, are first introduced. The analytical expressions of MGSM array beams propagating through free space and non-Kolmogorov turbulence are derived. The propagation properties, such as normalized average intensity and effective beam sizes of MGSM array beams are investigated and analyzed. It is found that the propagation properties of MGSM array beams depend on the parameters of the MGSM source and turbulence. It can also be seen that the beam size of Gaussian beams translated

In this paper a calculation model of propagation delays of satellite beams is introduced for LEO multi-beam satellite communications system. Based on actual parameters and beam coverage patterns of the Iridium and Globalstar system, the maximum propagation delay differentials in several typical beams from the center to the edge of the satellites coverage are calculated. Analysis of these results can provide reference for analyzing the feasibility of LEO multi-beam satellite system compatible with uplink synchronization in LTE.

We investigate the evolution properties of a partially coherent Laguerre–Gaussian vector vortex (LGVV) beam through inhomogeneous atmospheric turbulence. Analytical formulae for the elements of a cross-spectral density matrix of a partially coherent LGVV beam propagating in turbulence are derived with the help of the extended Huygens–Fresnel principle. Our outcomes demonstrate that the normalized initial profile of a partially coherent beam with concentric dark rings gradually evolves into a Gaussian-like beam profile in turbulence. We also find that the beam is emitted at a large zenith angle

Transformation of ordinary laser beams of Gaussian type into the ones of Bessel type gives a number of advantages. In particular, it may improve a multi-mode beam energy distribution in the far zone and keep it stable over a long range of propagation distances. A usual method of the Bessel beam formation is based on the use of one or a pair of axicons, at that the latter is used for creating annular beams with small conic angles optimized for long range propagation. The disadvantage of axicons is their fixed geometry not allowing the beam parameter adjustment. An additional Bessel beam improve

Laser beam cleanup properties of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in a multi-mode fiber have been characterized. It is shown that a fiber, which supports propagation of a highly aberrated pump beam, can generate a Gaussian-like Stokes beam consisting of one or more orders of Stokes components. The beam cleanup properties are found to be similar to those of stimulated Brillouin scattering, which are briefly reviewed herein. The dramatic enhancement in beam quality achievable through SRS clearly demonstrates the potential utility of fiber-based Raman beam cleanup/combining devices for laser bri

The group velocities of longitudinal and flexural wave propagations in single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes are studied in the frame of continuum mechanics. The dispersion relations between the group velocity and the wavenumber for flexural and longitudinal waves, described by a beam model and a cylindrical shell model, are established for both single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The effect of microstructures in carbon nanotubes on the wave dispersion is revealed through the non-local elastic models of a beam and a cylindrical shell, including the second-order gradient of strain an

There is a strong push worldwide to develop multi-Joule femtosecond duration laser pulses at wavelengths around 3.5-4 and 9-11 mu m within important atmospheric transmission windows. We have shown that pulses with a 4 mu m central wavelength are capable of delivering multi-TW powers at km range. This is in stark contrast to pulses at near-IR wavelengths which break up into hundreds of filaments with each carrying around 5 GW of power per filament over meter distances. This chapter introduces the concept of multi-beam antenna (MBA) in mobile ad hoc networks and the recent advances in the research relevant to this topic. MBAs have been proposed to achieve concurrent communications with multiple neighboring nodes while they inherit the advantages of directional antennas, such as the high directivity and antenna gain. MBAs can be implemented in the forms of multiple fixed-beam directional antennas (MFBAs) and multi-channel smart antennas (MCSAs). The former either uses multiple predefined beams or selects multiple directional antennas and thus is relatively sim

The mm-wave characteristics of short wavelength, high free-space path loss, and easy-to-be-blocking usually require mm-wave antennas with high gain and beam-scanning capability. Also, considering the very limited space occupied by antennas in mobile phones and the massive production of consumer electronics, small size, low cost, multiband, multi-polarization, and wide beam steering becomes the main key point of mm-wave array perf
