This chapter does not involve non-standard behaviour but is included as a contribution to the broader book theme on model building. The basic idea is to obtain greater flexibility in fitting a standard two-parameter base distribution by multiplying one of its parameters by a one-parameter mixing random variable with mean unity. Absorbing the random effect by integration yields what will be called a randomized parameter (also called compound) distribution depending on all three parameters involved. Abstract This sum arises when we estimate the area under the curve y = NF(x/M) by counting squares, and analyse the error using the row-of-teeth function. The details are given in Chapter 18. We write T /M for N to emphasize the analogy with Chapter 7. The analogy becomes stronger when we make F’(x) in this chapter correspond to F’(x) in Chapter 7, and allow for the effect of binomial coefficients multiplying the rational approximations to derivatives. The reason becomes apparent when we replace F(m) in Chapter 7 by F((m + h)/M)- F(m/M). A corresponding double sum is considered in Chapter 9.

The effect of hydrogen-embrittlement on fracture strain can be quantified via hydrogen-embrittlement constant, and it can be obtained by simulating small punch test in hydrogen. The fracture toughness of hydrogen-embrittled material can be simply estimated by multiplying the constant on fracture toughness of the un-embrittled material. Public investment in science and technology has multiplying effects on output, which benefits long-term productivity. If excessive, fiscal deficits and public debt can weaken the benefits of expansionary policies. Differentiating the impact of specific spending components and the economic environment on the provincial output and local fiscal conditions remains challenging.
