Abstract:
The composition of a musical work may be viewed as involving the exploitation, through various combinations, transformations and arrangements, of a finite set of compositional processes and musical materials. As a consequence, combinatorial and transformational processes and musical materials across various musical dimensions tend to be scattered throughout a musical work. Although the processes involved in music composition vary widely between composers, and indeed between works, in general these processes tend to be iterative, with the composer creating and revising musical materials within

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the design and implementation of an object-oriented toolkit for music notation. It considers whether object-oriented technology provides features that are desirable for representing music notation. The ability to sympathetically represent the conventions of music notation provides software tools that are flexible to use, and easily extended to represent less common features of music notation. The design and implementation of an object-oriented class hierarchy that captures the structural and semantic relationships of music notation symbols is described. Functions that

This essay describes a pattern oriented data structure, or PODS, as a system for storing computer music data. It organizes input by sequences or patterns that recur, while extensively interlinking the data. The interlinking process emulates cognitive models, while the pattern processing draws specifically from music cognition. The project aims at creating open source external objects for the Max/MSP software environment. The computer code for this project is in the C and Objective-C computer programming languages.
