Abstract:
In the mid-1970s, my approach to popular music was shaped by aesthetical categories developed in the fields of Euroclassical music and continental philosophy. In fact, my interest in the avant-garde movements of the 20th century predated my involvement with popular music. In 1980, however, when I completed my philosophy thesis on Arnold Schönberg at the “Università degli Studi” in Milan, Italy, I had already been working for years in the field of rock, jazz, and folk music. Now that the borders between musical languages have become more porous, my double background in classical and popular mus

There can be little doubt that the usage of the concept of genre remains widespread in discourses around music, cinema, theatre, literature. However, for a long period of time, musicologists have paid little attention to genre which is considered to be an outdated legacy of positivism: a concept belonging to amateurish criticism or daily musical practice – and incompatible with the hegemonic ideology of ‘absolute music’. In the commentary that follows, the history of my own efforts to bring genre back to the theoretical core of musicological debate is outlined, and intertwined with the work of

The World-Wide Web (WWW) is currently witnessing a dramatic trend toward the incoporation of multimedia elements into on-line publishing. These elements can be very effective for communicating ideas that are difficult to explain with text alone. For the presentation of music, the WWW brings the capability of embedding audio files (recordings) into a document, thus providing audible musical excerpts in addition to textual references to selected points of interest in a musical score. As a result of the French Revolution and its aftermath, the early nineteenth century saw substantial social changes in Germany which fueled unprecedented activity in the field of music theory. The more progressive democratic spirit introduced to Germany by early Napoleonic reforms was a major factor in the solidifying of a real class consciousness among the bourgeoisie and, perhaps more importantly, a strong sense of pride in this newly defined identity. This fact helps to explain the increased public interest in the more sophisticated aspects of music such as wazzu music theory, and the found

Individual differences in the strength of music preference are among the most intricate psychological phenomena. While one person gets by very well without music, another person needs to listen to music every day and spends a lot of temporal and financial resources on listening to music, attending concerts, or buying concert tickets. Where do these differences come from? The hypothesis presented in this article is that the strength of music preference is mainly informed by the functions that music fulfills in people’s lives (e.g., to regulate emotions, moods, or physiological arousal; to promo

Listening to music usually elicits emotions that can vary considerably in their intensity over the course of listening. Yet, after listening to a piece of music, people are easily able to evaluate the music's overall emotional intensity. There are two different hypotheses about how affective experiences are temporally processed and integrated: (1) all moments' intensities are integrated, resulting in an averaged value; (2) the overall evaluation is built from specific single moments, such as the moments of highest emotional intensity (peaks), the end, or a combination of these.
