Abstract:
The acute nervous system toxicity of organophosphate (OP) pesticides is well described. However, the reported long-term effects of OP pesticides on the nervous system are inconsistent. This inconsistency may be due to imprecise estimates of pesticide exposure, variability of central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS) assessment, small samples, and poor control of confounding. The primary goal of this research was to examine the association between long-term OP pesticide use on CNS and PNS function among pesticide applicators. An additional goal was to examine the associat

Childhood convulsive status epilepticus (CSE) is associated with considerable short-term mortality and morbidity, but data on long-term outcomes are uncertain. In addition, while the current evidence suggests that prolonged febrile seizures (PFS) can result in acute hippocampal injury, whether this evolves into mesial temporal sclerosis (MTS) and cause temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) in the long-term is uncertain. In the status epilepticus in childhood outcomes study (STEPSOUT), prospective follow-up of a previously identified unique population-based cohort was performed to investigate mortality,

1. INTRODUCTION Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is diagnosed at the presence of an estimated fetal weight below the 10th centile and is a frequent condition in perinatal medicine, reaching a prevalence of 5-8% in live newborn babies being a major contributor of perinatal and long term morbidity, such as neurological deficits. We hypothesized that these neurological impairement are related to brain microstructural changes which might be characterized by fetal neuroimaging, either MRI or ultrasonography. Introduction: The most appropriate airway management technique for use by paramedics in out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is yet to be determined and evidence relating to the influence of airway management strategy on outcome remains equivocal. In cases where return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) occurs following out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, patients may undergo direct transfer to a specialist heart attack centre (HAC) where the post resuscitation 12 lead ECG demonstrates evidence of ST elevation myocardial infarction. To date, no studies have investigated the role of airway management stra

Potassium and magnesium, two essential minerals, play important roles in the pathogenesis of hypertension, diabetes, and stroke. Dietary sodium excess contributes to the blood pressure elevation with age and increases the risk of stroke. Potassium can counteract the effect of sodium on hypertension and protect against stroke mortality. Magnesium nutriture has been associated with diabetes risk and severity of stroke symptom. Context: As one of the major causes of death and disability in Canada, research into the treatment and prevention of acute cerebrovascular syndrome (ACVS) remains a priority for clinicians, researchers and the general public. Understanding the relationship between current treatment practices of a rapid stroke clinic and patient outcomes is an essential part of measuring success and considering opportunities for quality improvement. Objective: This study compared the 90-day and 1-year hospital admission and mortality outcomes of patients who were referred to and seen in a rapid stroke clini

A reward responsiveness pleasurable music listening scanner paradigm was employed during brain scanning to assess reward responsivity prior to and following treatment.
