Abstract:
The study deals with the phenomenon of nonce words formation in the language of Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin. The research novelty is due to language material analysis aspect that was chosen by the author. In spite of such a great number of research works describing Pushkin's nonce words from the word-formation standpoint we make an attempt to deepen and develop the existing data. The goal of the study is to reveal specific features of nonce formation in the language of A.S. Pushkin. Nonce words are selected using the method of continuous sampling. These words receive the “nonce words” status

Abstract:
AbstractFor a long time, histories of the rise of the modern encyclopedia were mainly histories of publications: chronologies of large-scale, alphabetically organized reference works, successfully completed in one country after another, from the late 1600s onwards. Since none of the Scandinavian countries managed to publish general encyclopedias in the eighteenth century, researchers assumed that encyclopedic practice “reached” the northern periphery at a later date. However, the geographical expansion of a literary practice and the history of its most successful, printed outcomes do not necessarily share the same milestones. In this chapter, Linn Holmberg explores a number of stranded encyclopedias in eighteenth-century Sweden, detected partly through the periodical press, partly through archival research. The first part examines glimpses of encyclopedic projects seen through the journal Lärda tidningar (1745–1773). The second part reconstructs the encyclopedic efforts of two officials of the Swedish Bureau of Mines, who worked on an encyclopedia of mining and metallurgy for almost forty years (c. 1743–1787). By examining the motivations and circumstances underpinning the initiation, abandonment, and transformations of these projects, the study aspires to produce new insights into the early formation of alphabetical encyclopedic practice in eighteenth-century Sweden.

The paper deals with the productivity of several compounding models in Russian. Specifically, we will focus on compounds with agentive and instrumental meanings, aiming to determine the synchronic productivity of different models. We will describe the results of an experiment conducted among Russian native speakers, which consisted in the formation of nonce compounds in Russian translating Italian compounds. The results of the experiment show that the most productive model is the suffixless construction, and that the choice of a certain model depends on the semantics of the compound. The results also show that a seemingly crucial factor affecting productivity is constituted by analogy with existing complex words or compounds.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses (1) origin and concept of a ‘founding election’, (2) expectations associated with the consequences of such elections, (3) empirical findings of current research, and (4) the effects of founding elections on democratic consolidation. The concept is found to emphasize two criteria. The process of a founding election should provoke the formation of political parties, and the rules for the election should ensure that all major competitors regard the election as free and fair. The expectations associated with founding elections are mostly related to voter turnout, types of the emerging political parties, the structure of party systems, and possibilities of government formation. Not a great deal of empirical findings are based on quantitative cross-national research. Historically oriented studies dominate. Findings provided by comparative analyses are not easy to generalize because the countries under study and the temporal contexts are too disparate. None of the expectations to be found in the literature hold for all studies. Founding elections are at the heart of the beginning of democratic consolidation. They pave the way for the consolidation of political behaviour, in particular for the formation of ties between parties and the electorate. More empirical research is needed to generate results that are comparable across time and nations.

This chapter examines shell rings of the Georgia Coast. I argue that the vast majority of shell rings represent co-residential village communities, and thus are some of the earliest villages in eastern North America. I identify several types of collective action problems that the formation of villages likely presented to shell ring inhabitants at both the village and landscape scales. I suggest that there were several solutions to these problems, none of which required top-down hierarchical control. Instead, I present a narrative that explains the functioning of these villages as a highly cooperative, self-organizing hunter-gatherer system, rooted in local and regional interaction through rituals and the maintenance of collective mass capture facilities and fishing technology, and management of resources in the context of surplus production.

This chapter discusses the development of media and technology in Palestine in the wake of the Oslo Accords. For the first time in their modern history, the Palestinians were afforded, by the accords, the freedom for collective self-expression through mediated forms, such as radio and television. Palestinians were also permitted to build their own telecommunications infrastructure for land and mobile telephony, establish digital services, and engender an industry that would eventually make up a significant amount of the Palestinian GDP and play an important role in Palestinian society. However, the accords also inhibited the formation of these very industries. None of these media fields would be representatively or geographically national, many have operated quasi-illegally, and all of them continue to be hindered by Israeli policies and by the conditions of Palestinian Authority-international funding agreements that Oslo made possible.
