Abstract:
Background: Lung cancer is one of the most common causes of mortality in the world, right after cardiovascular diseases. The motivation for conducting this study was the fact that the number of newly diagnosed and death cases from lung cancer has been constantly growing, especially in the last few years. Objectives and Methods: The aim of the study was to present lung cancer (LC) as a public health problem today at the global level as well as in the Republic of North Macedonia. This is an analytical case-control study. It included all patients with a confirmed diagnosis of lung cancer (LC) wit

Species distribution modelling is a valuable tool for identifying areas most at risk of the spread of potentially harmful species. Here we model the environmental factors governing the distribution of a harmful species of concern that is currently found in Sweden at only a limited number of locations: the aquatic macrophyte N. peltata (sjögull). The most important factors determining risk of establishment are water chemistry (sufficient amounts of calcium is required), temperature (the species is partly limited by colder temperatures in Sweden) and connectivity to other water bodies. The racial/ethnic wealth gap is a stunning feature of U.S. household finances. Although the causes of the gap are complex, it is important that researchers investigate disparities between racial/ethnic groups in household financial management areas. We posit that first understanding insurance decisions as a critical component of overall household financial management is an important avenue for further understanding factors that may perpetuate or reduce the racial wealth gap. Moreover, risk management, including the purchase and use of insurance products, is a key yet challenging area for house

Abstract:
Geopolitical risks and tensions are nowadays regularly presented by policymakers and analysts as key conditioning factors of economic activity in both the short and the medium-run. Widely accepted operational measures of geopolitical risks tend to be based on counting the number of newspaper articles related to adverse geopolitical events, in particular following the ground-breaking paper of Caldara and Iacoviello (2022) in which they build their Geopolitical Risk (GPR) indexes. In this paper we propose one avenue to make further progress in the measurement of such risks. We provide a decompos

Species distribution modelling is a valuable tool for identifying areas most at risk of the spread of invasive species. Here we model the environmental factors governing the distributions of two invasive species of concern that are currently found in Sweden at only a limited number of locations: the aquatic macrophyte Elodea nuttallii (Nuttall’s waterweed / smal vattenpest) and the bivalve Dreissena polymorpha (Zebra mussel / vandrarmussla). Review question / Objective: Iron overload conditions is a well-established risk factor for infection of pathogens. The possible association of iron overload with infectious complications and prognosis of patients receiving transplants are not well understood. With the improvements in surgical techniques, immunosuppression strategies, and post-LT management of complications, the recipient mortality has steadily declined after LT. The surviva

Steinmann, Peter. Do interventions for educating traditional healers about STDs and HIV improve their knowledge and behaviour? SUPPORT, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.30846/170409.

Abstract:
Traditional healers are important healthcare providers in a number of societies for a variety of healthcare concerns, including sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV. However, some traditional healing practices are risk factors for HIV infection, such as male circumcision using unsterilized equipment. The provision of training for traditional healers about STDs, HIV and evidence based medicine is seen as a way to improve their knowledge, reduce risk behaviours, and improve acceptance of and collaboration with formal health services. Training could also increase referrals to the formal h

In the past, allowable stress design (ASD) was used to design steel structures. The allowable stresses used were determined from previous practice, with limited understanding of the reliability and risk performance provided by the structure. Engineering methods based on Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) provide more accurate lifetime models of structures by providing risk-based load factors. Besides improved safety, cost savings can be provided through improved performance and, in some cases, by delaying rehabilitation. This research project develops LRFD-based engineering procedures fo

Abstract:
This study proposed a risk-based safety management framework to supplement the current crash-based safety management system. The proposed tool considers time-dependent factors (e.g., hourly traffic, speed features, weather conditions, signal controls) to help justify operational measures for safety improvements (e.g., variable message signs, variable speed limits, warnings). These selected temporal factors subsequently were included in the developed sequential logit models; and those models, applied hour by hour, were then used to estimate the crash probability and severity level. Abstract:
This document provides a short literature review on the complementarity (and antagonisms) between liability rules, safety regulation and insurance and their effect on safety management. It draws on a range of disciplines, with a focus on economic analysis of law and regulation theory. Some of the issues discussed are rather complex; this document attempts to provide simple explanations together with references to the professional literature for the interested reader. Some issues are the subject of ongoing debate between scholars; in such situations, we have attempted to present the various poi
