Abstract:
This book focuses on the referendums against water privatization in Italy and explores how activists took to social media, ultimately convincing twenty-seven million citizens to vote. Investigating the relationship between social movements and internet-related activism during complex campaigns, this book examines how a technological evolution — the increased relevance of social media platforms — affected in very different ways organizations with divergent characteristics, promoting at the same time decentralized communication practices, and new ways of coordinating dispersed communities of people. Matteo Cernison combines and adapts a wide set of methods, from social network analysis to digital ethnography, in order to explore in detail how digital activism and face-to-face initiatives interact and overlap. He argues that the geographical scale of actions, the role played by external media professionals, and the activists’ perceptions of digital technologies are key elements that contribute in a significant way to shape the very different communication practices often described as online activism.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses hostility. It reviews the epidemiological evidence documenting the health-damaging effects of hostility and associated psychosocial characteristics; the biobehavioral mechanisms whereby these characteristics lead to poor health; and clinical trials documenting the benefits of behavioral interventions aimed at ameliorating the impact of psychosocial risk factors on health and disease. The chapter also presents a case study on the LifeSkills Workshop, which aims to train persons with a hostile personality to use coping skills.

Abstract:
There has been an abundance of research using animal, healthy human, and patients on the mechanism of action of TENS. Activity in peripheral nerves generated during TENS will influence physiological actions at peripheral, spinal, and supraspinal sites of the nervous system. Some of these physiological actions are mediated by alterations in the concentrations of neurochemicals dependent on the electrical characteristics of TENS. The purpose of this chapter is to discuss research evidence that has contributed to our knowledge about the physiological and pharmacological actions of TENS, including the mechanism of action of conventional TENS and AL-TENS, peripheral mechanisms of TENS, central mechanisms of TENS, findings from inflammatory and neuropathic models of pain, and the neuropharmacology of TENS hypoalgesia and TENS tolerance.

Abstract:
We summarize the formal theoretical literature on Supreme Court decision-making. We focus on two core questions: What does the Supreme Court of the United States do, and how can one model those actions; and, what do the justices of the Supreme Court want, and how can one model those preferences? Given the current state of play in judicial studies, these questions then direct this survey mostly to so-called separation of powers (SOP) models, and to studies of a multi-member (“collegial”) court employing the Supreme Court’s very distinctive and highly unusual voting rule. The survey makes four main points. First, it sets out a new taxonomy that unifies much of the literature by linking judicial actions, modeling conventions, and the treatment of the status quo. In addition, the taxonomy identifies some models that employ inconsistent assumptions about Supreme Court actions and consequences. Second, the discussion of judicial preferences clarifies the links between judicial actions and judicial preferences. It highlights the relationships between preferences over dispositions, preferences over rules, and preferences over social outcomes. And, it explicates the difference between consequential and expressive preferences. Third, the survey delineates the separate strands of SOP models. It suggests new possibilities for this seemingly well-explored line of inquiry. Fourth, the discussion of voting emphasizes the peculiar characteristics of the Supreme Court’s voting rule. The survey maps the movement from early models that ignored the special features of this rule, to more recent ones that embrace its features and explore the resulting (and unusual) incentive effects.

Abstract:
This book explores the functional teleology of action present in Plato’s Republic. In many discussions of ancient philosophy, teleology is acknowledged as an important theme: events, actions, and the bodies of organisms in nature have particular characteristics for the sake of some end or purpose. Two varieties of teleology are commonly recognized, the natural teleology of organisms and the intentional teleology of action pursued with the goal of promoting a particular end. This book is devoted to the discussion of a third variety of teleology present in Plato’s Republic. In some cases, actions are carried out for the sake of an end that is not intended as a goal. Such cases arise when the actions in question perform a function that is required for human flourishing. This functional teleology of action is examined first in Plato’s Symposium in relation to the function of eros, giving birth in the beautiful. In Book 1 of the Republic Socrates uses the function of engaging in partnerships as he argues that the just life is more beneficial to a human being than the life of injustice. The functional teleology of action sheds light on further sections of the argument of the Republic: the construction of the best city, the division of the soul, and the defense of justice in Book 4. The intellectual ascent of the guardians through mathematics to the Form of the Good in Books 6 and 7 is examined as a case of acting for the sake of an end that is not intended as a goal.

Abstract:
Investment fraud is a significant problem in America. Many Baby Boomers are entering retirement with significant assets, and enforcement actions by financial regulators indicate that investors can be vulnerable to fraud at key ‘wealth events’ in their lives, such as when they face a decision about what to do with money arising from the sale of a house, an inheritance, or an IRA rollover. Protecting these assets—for Baby Boomers and younger generations who face key wealth events—will be important to ensure the financial well-being and retirement security of millions of Americans. This chapter reviews the prevalence and impact of financial and investment fraud, explores the value of using demographic characteristics, psychographic characteristics, and the number of times an individual is targeted for fraud to predict investment fraud victimization, explains how fraudsters use social influence tactics to defraud their victims, and describes current investor protection efforts.

Abstract:
The essential insight of speech act theory was that when we use language, we perform actions—in a more modern parlance, core language use in interaction is a form of joint action. Over the last thirty years, speech acts have been relatively neglected in linguistic pragmatics, although important work has been done especially in conversation analysis. Here we review the core issues—the identifying characteristics, the degree of universality, the problem of multiple functions, and the puzzle of speech act recognition. Special attention is drawn to the role of conversation structure, probabilistic linguistic cues, and plan or sequence inference in speech act recognition, and to the centrality of deep recursive structures in sequences of speech acts in conversation.

Abstract:
Cross-cultural differences in social perceptions pose an intriguing puzzle. East Asians, in contrast to Westerners, tend to have the view that individuals lack coherent and thematically consistent characteristics and, therefore, are likely to exhibit cross-situationally inconsistent actions and reactions. This tendency is explained in terms of naïve dialecticism. However, from a different domain of perception, East Asians perceive groups as possessing more coherent and thematically consistent characteristics than ascribed by Westerners. Does this apparent contradiction mean that, unlike individual selves, groups are not dialectically construed by East Asians? One way to reconcile these findings is to say that naïve dialecticism is domain-specific—East Asian dialecticism applies to individuals, but not to groups. Another is to consider individualism–collectivism and argue that East Asians perceive groups as more entitative because they are collectivistic, and Westerners perceive individuals as more entitative because they are individualistic. Pros and cons for these explanations are examined in this chapter and future research directions are suggested.

Abstract:
This article is concerned with caring for place, the interweaving of community, landscape, and culture. Culturally reflexive stewardship (crs) involves actions to sustain a way of life, motivated by a shared appreciation of place, landscape, and region, and expressed through practices that transmit cultural knowledge and affirm a social identity. The article first contrasts two resource regimes, one based on a logic of tradeoffs and markets, the other on a logic of stewardship. Second, it presents the key characteristics of crs, emphasizing the linkage of intellectual content (local knowledge) with an ethical imperative based in the symbolic qualities of place. Finally, the article explores the relationship of stewardship to social organization, and offers examples of crs in three modes, termed “living in place,” “conservation and recovery,” and “polarization and protest.”
