Abstract:
This study explores the direct and indirect influences that are presumed to have contributed to the artistic originality of Tanwŏn Kim Hongdo (檀園 金弘道, 1745–1806) by employing a multidimensional analysis and a social-scientific approach to creativity. To identify the sources of his artistic innovation, individuals associated with Kim were categorized into six groups, each of which played a significant role during specific periods of his life and artistic development. In Kim’s early years, as he established himself as a painter in the Tohwasŏ (Royal Bureau of Painting), the literati group led by

AbstractThe earliest extant playscript in Korea stands as an enigma. It is an anonymous work written to celebrate a wedding arranged by King Chŏngjo. Called Story of the Eastern Chamber, the play evokes not only the Chinese Story of the Western Chamber through titular reference but also the Chinese vernacular tradition as a whole. Written entirely in Chinese characters, the text weaves vernacular Korean words into the syntax of Chinese baihua vernacular, an unusual form which upsets the conventional diglossic binary of literary Chinese (hanmun) and vernacular Korean (hangŭl). Abstract During the reigns of Yŏngjo (r. 1724–76) and Chŏngjo (r. 1776–1800), royal audiences and tests were established as important components of the mangbaerye-day events. For the two rulers, the audience was an occasion to use the significance of the rituals to justify bureaucratic promotions for the attendees. The literary and military tests on mangbaerye days were systematized by Yŏngjo and administered by the ruler as a stage in the state examination. By assuming leading ideological roles through rituals, Yŏngjo was able to present the image of a sage-ruler with supreme political and id

Abstract:
The present work examines the attempt of Chŏngjo, King of Korea from 1776 to 1800, to shift the balance of power in late Chosŏn Korea in favor of the crown. It examines the official court records, the King’s official writings, and the recent discovery of Chŏngjo’s “secret” letters to high official and ostensible enemy Sim Hwan-ji, using them to illustrate how the King navigated the labyrinthine webs of power. Chapter 1 lays the groundwork of late Chosŏn history and examines Chŏngjo’s legitimacy issues arising from the death of his father. Chapter 2 deals with political philosophy, as Chŏngjo s

P’ansori is a unique form of Korean traditional music in the opera genre. It is known for its distinctive rhythm, vocal timbre, key, and texture. Musical pioneer Dongjin Kim (1913-2009) masterfully blended authentic Korean music with Western style music most notably in two operas that retained their p’ansori heritage while also appealing to wider audiences. Kim believed in the importance of accurately portraying Korean culture and history in his vocal music feeling that Korea’s “unique national music” had much to contribute to the rest of the world. In the Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Kunstkamera, Saint Petersburg), there is an eight-panel screen attributed to Kyŏmjae Chŏng Sŏn (1676‑1759), one of the most important artists in the history of Korean art. Chŏng Sŏn was a pioneer of so-called ‘true-view’ landscapes. Only a few works of the artist are in museum collections outside the Korean peninsula, one of which is the screen in question. Each landscape is signed and bears a seal with the name and pen name of the artist, based on which, presumably, the work was attributed to the
