The international literary genre better known as Magical Realism had on Gabriel García Márquez’s laureate book One Hundred Years of Solitude one of its major inspirations. The movement of Boom boosted the original recognition of Latin American’s authors during the 1960s and 1970s sparking a world-scale debate about the existence of whether or not a mythical or legendary reality goes beyond the strict reality of West. Aside this acknowledgment, the view around One Hundred Years of Solitude became affiliated to a metaphorical representation of Colombia and Latin American culture and history. This dissertation intends to question the link between nation and inter-national through this literary symbol of twentieth century. Therefore, an intersection will be made between literature, modernity and post-coloniality. With Gabriel García Márquez’s local utterances my aim is to question the normalized values of authority and signification easily assumed and simultaneously produced by modernization theory and Eurocentric remnants, mainly International Relations epistemology. To this purpose I take an out of joint account of time and space allied with a poetics of solitude to enable a displacement of the boundaries that split the magical and the real.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine the coexistence of time in Gabriel Garcfa Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude as a cause of the supernatural events, the hereditary memory, and the solitude and to examine the effects of this mythical time frame on character development, plot, narrative structure, and theme. The thesis is divided into five chapters. The first chapter introduces the parchments as creators of mythical time. The second, third, and fourth chapters investigate the effects of this unconventional time. Supernatural events, clairvoyance, and solitude are all examined as effects. The final chapter correlates the writing of the parchments with the writing of the novel and explains the effects of unconventional time on the reader. Thus, this thesis illustrates how the coexistence of time functions of two levels: the level of the parchments and the level of the novel.

Abstract:
Motivated by the lack of scholarship surrounding female characters in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude, I sought to examine the distinct identities of four female characters. The collapse of dualities and embodiment of hybridity in Ursula, Pilar Ternera, Amaranta, and the Remedios women reveals the hegemonic power structures that are disrupted by these empowered women. The exploration of these women and their relationships to gendered dichotomies points to the potential of their identities in enacting colonial resistance and reclaiming traditional cultural heritage.

Yates, Benjamin. "One hundred years of band tradition at Luther College." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/3226.

Full text
Abstract:
The Luther College Concert Band has enjoyed nearly 150 years of success. International tours, regional tours, concerts, service to the college and recording projects aided the success of this small college band that retained its Lutheran, liberal arts identity. Published documents exist about the Luther College band before 1948 but no comprehensive published documents are available after that time. This essay provides a more complete history of the band since 1948 based upon archival research and interviews with Weston Noble, Fredrick Nyline and Joan deAlbuquerque. The Concert Band started as a student led activity, which set it apart from other university bands of the late nineteenth century that had military connections. The Luther band eventually became an academic area of study and performed solely for campus concerts and on tours. The band took tours to Norway and Europe long before most college bands had touring programs. Later the band toured to Japan, China and Europe and continued regional tours throughout the United States. The Concert Band conductors, particularly the tenures of Carlo Sperati, Weston Noble, Frederick Nyline and Joan deAlbuquerque, helped shape the band program and music department at Luther College. This is a study of their educational philosophies that shaped the band, and the support the program received from the college administration, students and alumni. Also included is information about the Dorian Band Festival hosted by Luther College, works commissioned by the band, a review of works programed by conductors, a listing of recordings by the Luther College Concert Band and biographical information about each conductor.

Curry, Curtis. "One hundred years of servitude : the Colombian labor movement 1848-1948." FIU Digital Commons, 1992. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/2699.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study seeks not only to place into focus the general patterns of social and economic organization prevalent in Colombia in the late nineteenth century and the early twentieth (such political and economic organization has been ably illustrated by several authors), but also strives to elucidate the systems of thought or 'ideologies' to which such socio-economic and political structures gave rise. It is concerned with the thought-systems that influenced the development of the Colombian labor movement, those of actors external to organized labor and indigenous systems of thought of labor activists themselves. The hypothesis is that class and party-based interests channelled the early development of organized labor toward a path that would further, or failing that, not conflict with dominant elite interests. Artisans, proudly independent, exerted inordinate influence over the movement, hindering the development of working class consciousness. As the result of dominance by élites external to the labor movement itself, workers were never able to forge an independent voice that would allow them to define their own interests in society.

The realities of the built past and the palimpsest-ic nature of activities on the African mining landscape is under critique. On a site where nature gives way to the man-made activity of platinum ore excavation and mineral extraction, the activity of mining essentially creates infrastructures of dust and filthy landscapes. Inserting a new architecture within this obliterated savannah landscape allows for a process of reclamation to take place. This project uses an abandoned mine site in Southern Africa and focuses on the environmental mitigation and civic development of the site adjacent to the existing mining town of 40,000 inhabitants. The derelict mineshafts serve as infrastructure for a new civic space of scenic agrarian routes and programmed enclosures: auction floors, warehouses, residential short-stay rooms, water purification systems, mineral baths, crop rotational schemes, research labs and a museum space.

Abstract:
The geographical landscape has always been attractive to everyone because there you can express the human curiosity to know the surrounding world. The ways to present or to describe these landscapes fill the literature books and, in the Peruvian case, there are the works of all writers to a major or minor degree. Thus, at the beginning of the 20th century it is notable the figure of the historian José de la Riva-Agüero y Osma, himself an aristocrat from Lima who made an heroic travel from Cusco to Ocopa, Huancayo, at a time when there were not roads, making the trip on mule back. Here we present a brief description of an experience made in October, 2012, where we look to capture some of Riva-Agüero’s impressions that could have marked his vision about the life conditions of the high mountain people of the Andes, which may have changed his political view of them.

Jennings, William. "One Hundred Years of Slavery: A Sociohistorical and Demographic Study of the Origins of Cayenne Creole." Thesis, University of Auckland, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2292/911.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis takes a new approach to the study of the genesis of the lexically-French based Cayenne Creole, which emerged in French Guiana around the beginning of the eighteenth century. The study begins with an an overview of theories of creole genesis that describes the various schools of thought, notably the diffusionist, superstratist, substratist and universalist positions. Part 2 of the thesis examines the social history of Cayenne from 1650 to 1750. It provides information about the various early settlements of Cayenne Island, particularly the Dutch and Portugese Jewish establishment from 1654 to 1664 that saw the beginning of large-scale African enslavement in the colony. The development of the slave community in the context of the French colony is examined in detail, particularly with respect to the conditions of the slaves and their origins. Part 3 deals with the demography of Cayenne from 1650 to 1750. It features a detailed analysis of colonial censuses during this time, and looks at the 1690 slave list of Goupy des Marets in great detail. The origin of the slave ships to Cayenne is also discussed. Finally, Part 4 draws on the information provided in the social history and demography to suggest a model for the genesis of Cayenne Creole. The validity of this model will be tested in future linguistic studies of Cayenne Creole.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis analyses the meaning of unity and unification in post-war Italian life through a transnational study of the two great events staged for the celebration of one hundred years of Italian unification: Italia '61 and the Festival of Italy. Held in Turin, Italia '61 was the Italian national celebration and the overall purpose was to put on display the 'progress made in Italy in 100 years of national life' and to make a statement about Italy's place in the Cold War world order. To do so it comprised three major components: a Historical Exhibition, which traced a history of unification focused on the Risorgimento and the Resistance; a Regional Exhibition; and the International Labour Exhibition, which contained displays on work practices and conditions from twenty-one nations and international organisations. Across the Atlantic in Philadelphia, the Festival of Italy was the largest Italian centennial commemoration held outside Italy and it had been planned in conjunction with the Italia '61 organisers and collaboratively with the Italian American community in Philadelphia. The Festival's theme was 'lOO years of Progress' and the corresponding exhibitions and events emphasised the cultural richness of Italy, the high culture of Italy, the contribution of Italy and Italian culture and people to contemporary civilisation and in particular to the U.5., and the modernity of contemporary Italy. This thesis presents the argument that 1961 represents a change or turning point in the way identity was celebrated and so conceived in both Italy and among Italian American communities. The effects of the reconfiguration are identified through analysis of the national, international, intergovernmental, ethnic and transnational relationships in operation at Italia '61 and the Festival of Italy.

Abstract:
The manuscript Aix-en-Provence, municipal library, 428(306) contains two different texts. The first, La Chanson de Bertrand du Guesclin, is a rimed epic poem telling the life of Bertrand du Guesclin (1320-1380), a Britain knight from a modest background who took part of the One Hundred Years War, and would become the constable of France. This biography has been written by a certain Cuvelier between 1380 and 1385, right after Bertrand's death. The second is a set of seven lyric poems written in memory of Bertrand, three of which were written by Eustache Deschamps. The first text, at the same time historical, epic, a tribute, biographie and poem, has a considerable importance in the literary production of the day as the last chanson de geste to be written in French. The poems celebrating the constable are fully in line with the lyric revival of the end of the 14th century. Through our study, we like to discover or rediscover this underrated work ; we will provide original text of the manuscript, descriptions of the other manuscripts, a literary review including a study of the context and new information about the author, a linguistic study, critical notes, a glossary, an index, a list of proverbs, and a comprehensive bibliography

This study aimed to explore the possibility of introducing magic realist texts to the vocational high school English textbooks. 127 third-year boy students from Aeronautical Technical School in Kangshan, Kaohsiung, were divided into high-, mid- and low-achievement groups according to their English achievements for the past four semesters. One Chinese and three English magic realist episodes from Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude were offered to the students. Three questionnaires and response journals were designed to elicit their responses to the texts. During the 18-hour experiment, the teacher focused her instruction only on the English language itself, avoiding imposing her personal ideas on the students. The students shaped their own responses to the texts through activities like group discussion and journal writing. The major results of the study are as follows: 1.Most of the students showed capacities for comprehending the magic realist texts by giving wide range of responses from personal involvement to elaborated analysis. They could also clearly identify the text’s essential elements, techniques, and the author’s intention. 2.Most low and middle achievers felt that the three magic realist texts succeeded in arousing their reading interest, and helped acquire vocabulary and grammatical items or structures more efficiently. 3.Magic realist texts contained a large number of new words but many of the words looked familiar to the students. It indicated that textbooks failed to offer enough vocabulary exposure for students to acquire the new words. 4.High achievers were in need of more challenging reading materials because none of them felt that the sentence structures in the textbooks were difficult; whereas, they could handle the magic realist texts with a larger number of new words and more difficult sentence structures. 5.If the magic realist texts were to be introduced to their textbooks, the students suggested cutting down the number of new words and paragraphs, and paraphrasing the abstract sentences. Hence, how to meet their requirements and also keep intact the characteristics of the text is really a challenge. An interesting finding in this study is that the same magic realist text could be favored by some students because it was realistic to them but rejected by others because they felt it was too exaggerated. The realistic and the exaggerated are the two main features in magic realism. However, it was the realistic, not the exaggerated, in a magic realist text that attracted the vocational high school students. Therefore classroom instruction should be focused more on assisting the students in perceiving the real elements (truth) imbedded the exaggerated magic techniques.

The position of the translation analysis is getting more and more important day by day because of the increasing of the Spanish translation works. Thus, One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien años de soledad), by the Nobelist of Literature, Gabriel García Márquez, was chosen to start with investigating the noun translation and sorting out the translation of the name, place, animal, plant…etc from it and further probe into the characteristic and the style of the translation. There are four chapters and eight sections in this thesis. The first chapter is the brief presentation and description of the author and his works. The second chapter is the arrangement and the brief presentation of Gabriel García Márquez’s translations. The third chapter is not only the description of the translators’ life of One Hundred Years of Solitude but also the presentation of the characteristic of the four translation works. The fourth chapter is the main part of this thesis. The noun translation principles are introduced at the beginning; and then the names of these four translations are arranged into the tables, and the noun translation and the translator’s style are inspected simultaneously. I try to inquire into the noun translation from the mistranslation, omission, amplification, meaning…etc. Finally, I make a simple narration and comments from the translation style and characteristic of the noun translations at the end of thesis; moreover, I intend to reaffirm the importance and the position of the noun translation in One Hundred Years of Solitude and in the translation field.

Abstract This thesis examines how magical realism accentuates themes of destruction due to perverted man-woman relationships and sexuality in Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. One Hundred Years of Solitude holds a revered place in the world of fiction for its portrayal of Latin America: its stark contrasts, its searing sexuality and its violence. By examining this Nobel Prize-winning novel, Latin American magical realism is highlighted at its best, seamlessly binding the fantastic with realistic circumstances, as if nothing were out of the ordinary. Many critics see this as a portrayal of Latin American culture, where exaggerations are accepted as gospel. These exaggerations highlight destructive themes Marquez weaves into his novel, warning against incest, unrestrained sexuality, and gender stereotypes. In this thesis, I examine how perverted man-woman relationships and sexuality destroy the Buendia family, which strove for control over passion and the beastly degeneration in human nature. This novel, which critics have long praised as the cornerstone of Latin American magical realism, actually tells a story of a family obsessed with incest and the havoc wrought on a family who disregards taboo and makes their own rules. Keywords: One Hundred Years of Solitude, incest, taboo, sexuality, stereotypes, gender roles, Latin America, magical realism

Columbian writer Gabriel García Márquez, who got the Nobel Prize in 1982, is a very important contemporary writer in the literary world in Spanish countries. There are a lot of abundant symbols that identify with the argument in his masterwork, One Hundred Years of Solitude (Cien años de soledad, 1967). In this dissertation, the theme focuses mainly on “dream” and “God” to analyze the symbolism. But, we try to use the theory symbolic of Carl Gustav Jung, the Swedish psychologist, to explore the symbolism of “dream” and “God”. In the chapter of “dream”, it is divided five topics: (a) dream of creation, (b) daydream, (c) dream of nostalgia, (d) dream of love, (f) dream of death. In part of “God”, it has five subjects: (a) image of God, (b) existence of God, (c) God and priest, (d) God in our heart, (f) God and saving. We hope that analyzing the symbolism of these two focuses can search and realize significance of content circumspectly. According to the saying of Jung, the vital spark of work can continue forever, but it needs us to appreciate and comprehend newly. Consequently, we desire that One Hundred Years of Solitude and the theory of Jung can spark each other in this dissertation. Also we desire that García Márquez and his novel both can show another appearance.

The Dream of Red Chamber and One Hundred Years of Solitude adopt fantastic writing skills that blend true and false into one part, then twine with love tragedy, decay of the principal family as Jia’s, Buendia’s into a bizarre masterpiece . Hence, it not only reflects the traditional Myth in China and Latin-America, also be regarded as a realistic epitome of Ching Dynasty and short history of Columbia, Latin-America, respectively. This thesis would demonstrate the desire of eternal return and the varied appearances of the great mother. To be more exact, the former is composed by “mother archetype” and “damsel archetype”, and the later concludes capricious looks that possesses distinctive duty, status, and power from pre-history (her-story) to history. First, the great mother Jia-Mu/Ursula, as a defender and saver of clan, her exist in mortal world witnesses the variation of whole family, house and the universe. In fact, she makes up a perfect uroboros circle while representing a starting point. Secondly, the great mother turns into the Goddess of love, who is responsible for sex and love. Take Ching Ke Chin/Pilar Ternera for example, “she” possesses a secret, seductive room. Thereafter she leads male protagonists into “her room” and enlightens them from brutal to civilized. Further I then discuss body and space, the legend of sacred harlot in temple, and the changeable identity as mother, lover, young girl in one character. Beside “mother archetype” of eternal return, in terms of “damsel archetype”, Dia-Yu/ Remedios the Beatuty matches with the characteristics of this kind of ” virgin worship”, that is, unmarried, pure, and innocent. The traits stated above connect with Goddess and pure young girls, including the reflection and transformation in each other. Finally, Petra Cotes, well-known as a seductive mistress, or notorious whore, in fact is a transformation of Goddess of love that holds magical power which can dominate the prosperity and adversity of the whole world. To sum up, the varied appearances of the great mother, from original great mother transforms into “Goddess of Earth”, then her face separates into the Goddess dominates love and beauty, further while enters in patriarchal period, “her title” then turn into sorceress, witches or other negative names. In conclusion, despite the distinctive historical background, myths and writing stories, however, two books implicitly suggest the deep unconsciousness in common, especially the desire and fascinated feelings of eternal return. The true meaning of comparative literature is to find out the mutual archetype: thoughts, consciousness, and emotions. Now, through The Dream of Red Chamber and One Hundred Years of Solitude, we just do it!

Arnold, Brian John. "Justification One Hundred Years After Paul." Diss., 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10392/4527.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to answer the following question: how did the doctrine of justification fare one hundred years after Paul's death (c. AD 165)? The thesis argued is that Paul's view of justification by faith is present in the second century, which particularly challenges T. F. Torrance's long-held notion that the Apostolic Fathers abandoned this doctrine. Chapter 1 provides an overview for the study. Groundwork is laid by providing a history of research on the reception of Paul in the second century as well as a section examining the important works on justification in the Fathers. Chapter 2 examines justification in 1 Clement. Looking primarily at chapter 32, it is argued that Clement held to justification by faith alone apart from works, despite the frequent claim that he held to works righteousness. Chapter 3 analyzes the seven letters of Ignatius. Although he only makes one pertinent reference to justification, Ignatius does have much to say against Judaism, which reveals a good deal about his view of justification. Chapter 4 covers the oft-tread ground of justification in the Epistle to Diognetus. The ninth chapter of Diognetus contains the clearest expression of justification in the second century. Chapter 5 surveys the Odes of Solomon. This overlooked songbook has a wealth of soteriological motifs, including mentions of justification. In at least three Odes there appears to be a dependence on Paul for the Odist's view of justification, and at times, imputation. Chapter 6 explores justification in Justin Martyr's Dialogue with Trypho. Trypho informs Justin that he must keep the whole law in order to be saved. Justin, in turn, looks to the Old Testament, particularly to Abraham, as proof that justification comes by faith and not by adherence to the law. The five authors examined demonstrate greater theological continuity between the first and second centuries than has often been recognized. Paul's doctrine of justification by faith was not replaced with works righteousness in the following century. Justification fared well one hundred years after the Apostle's death.

Full text
Abstract:
The Botany Department of Rhodes University is located in the historic Schonland Building. An indigenous garden was created in its courtyard, mainly of species of the Eastern Cape province, and its growth in diversity and stature mirrors the changes in the department over the years. Professor Selmar Schonland, the founding father of botany at Rhodes, was also the curator/director of the Albany Museum. Under his leadership, systematics was firmly established as a discipline at Rhodes and research on the flora of the Eastern Cape begun, to be continued to this day. Under professors William Isaac (1949–1951) and Edgar Twyman (1951–1973), plant physiology became an important area of study, and future leaders in physiology at other universities obtained degrees under them. Phycology and aquatic ecology became notable disciplines with Mary Pocock’s world-class work in the 1940s on freshwater and marine algae, which inspired others such as head of department Professor Stanley Seagrief (1958–1986) to develop these studies further. Mycology and microbiology were established as major subdisciplines under Noel Smith (1926–1948) and Twyman through to the 1960s, when the Department of Microbiology was established. Early studies in ecology owe their success to Tony Martin (1947–1956) and the link with the Grahamstown Botanical Research Station, when a sound base for plant ecology in the Eastern Cape was established. Coastal ecology became a major focus in the 1970s, when Roy Lubke and Ted Avis concentrated on dunes and the management of coastal regions. This led to the establishment of the Department of Environmental Science in the 1990s. The expertise of the botany staff in teaching and research in a variety of fields is reflected in the careers of its many students around the world.

Napier, William A. "Inco Limited : one hundred years of operation : where do we go from here?" 2002. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/9426.

Full text
Abstract:
Inco is celebrating a 100 years of operations. One of the environmental areas we have worked hard at is reclamation and rehabilitation. For example in 1916 Inco's predecessor company, Canadian Copper Company, established its Agricultural Department as a first attempt of reclaiming mining and roasting areas. In keeping with societal changes reclamation concepts, designs, objectives and expectations have changed with each passing decade. This paper highlights some of these milestones. This paper provides a brief review of how the mining industry and, in particular, Inco has managed the evolutionary changes in mine rehabilitation. The paper describes how reclamation planning has become an integrated feature of a Project's economic feasibility study, how progressive reclamation has been incorporated at mining operations and how mine closure techniques are employed and advanced globally. This paper touches on some of the current issues facing a company's reclamation effort. Rationalizing a mine closure in the context of sustainable development is just one of a series of challenges currently being addressed by the mining community. A perspective is provided on other topics such as assessing closure finality i.e. is there ever a truly walk away situation; addressing future technological advances in the wake of current operating practices, and securing financial assurance. The importance of risk management is also discussed. Finally the paper speculates on how reclamation affect constituents can help chart a path forward as Inco enters its second century.

After the end of the martial law period in Taiwan in 1987, the Hakka movement and the Hakka consciousness rose and gained momentum in the society. At that time, the publishing of The Island Trilogy of One Hundred Years by Chung Wenyin came into being on Hakka issues. The first volume of the trilogy, Decayed Lust, describes Hakka subjects in the 1990s when the stock market index reached 10,000 points and the whole society was crazy about political media. The second volume, Decayed History, outlined the suffering of three major Zhaoan Hakka families (named Chung, Shu & Liao, respectively) from male perspectives. The last volume, Decayed Land, narrated all kinds of heart-breaking experiences of women. These three novels are all named after the “song style”, a traditional Chinese literary genre referring to the concept of “galloping” and “travelling”. In the postscript of Decayed Lust, Chung lays out the important idea of “floating people” and points out the meaning of “travelling” in depth. Although Chung is Zhaoan Hakkanese of Yunlin County, an area where people have been extremely Hoklolized, she did not have any idea about Hakka consciousness until she finished her college education. Due to this reason, my argument about her Hakka consciousness takes up Gong Pengcheng's view on Hakka people as he proposes the binary concepts of “living” and “traveling” in his The Cultural History of the Spirit of Travelling. The finding of my research is as follows: although the Hakka elements in The Island Trilogy are rich, they did not play an important role in the structure of the novels. Different from the current discussion of Hakka consciousness which has emphasized blood and soil, Chung's Hakka consciousness that features “floating” and “travelling” is totally personal, in line with the literary themes of famous women writers such as Chang Ailing and Marguerite Duras. With this understanding in mind, I argue that Chung's travelling spirit in her Island Trilogy could subvert traditional Hakka stress on “living” and on land, without sacrificing her abundant knowledge of her hometown.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the health-related physical fitness performance during three consecutive years among 578 students in one junior high school in New Taipei City. The study included 292 boys and 286 girls in the year of 2011 to 2013. The T-tests and one-way ANOVA were used (α=0.05) to analyze the data and the results of health-related physical fitness variables were compared to the National Physical Fitness Test average score. The results were listed as followed : (1). The performance of bent-leg sit-up, standing long jump, and 1600 meter run/walk of male students were increased during the three consecutive years. The performance of 1600 meter run/walk was significantly higher than the national average scores during the second and third years. (2). Three years of female students’ scores of standing long jump were statistically better than those of national average score. The performance of 800 meter run/walk in the second and third year was significantly higher than the national average score. The scores of bent-leg sit-up and sit-and-reach were no different compared to the national average scores. The results suggest that cardiorespiratory fitness in male and female students in this school was better compared to the average junior high students. In conclusion, the performance of health-related physical fitness in this school were around average compared to national data except cardiorespiratory fitness, we suggest PE classes in this school could focus more on muscle strength/endurance training and flexibility training.

Perfect, Mary Brewster. "One hundred years in the history of the rural schools of Manitoba : their formation, reorganization and dissolution (1871-1971)." 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/3990.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an attempt to present and to preserve, in an accessible form, certain pertinent data concerning the formation and major changes which took place in the organization of the rural school districts of Manitoba between 1871 and 1971. During that century, the original districts were established, dissolved or reorganized into one or more of a variety of administrative units before becoming indistinguishable parts of school divisions. A brief survey of the history of education in the Red River settlement and Manitoba is first presented, providing the background necessary for an account of the development of rural educational facilities within the province. The author was granted access to the formation files of the school distrícts of Manitoba. She also had several informal discussions with officials of the Administration Branch of the Manitoba Department of Education. Although there are some empty formation files and several which contain a minimal amount of information, the author, taking into consideration the frontier and pioneer conditions which existed in various sections of the province for many years following 1871 and realizing the difficulties and human frailties involved in setting up the original system of collecting data, was surprised to note, not how litt1e, but rather how much information has been recorded and preserved. The data presented consist of the names and numbers of the districts, sites of their school buildings and their formation, reorganization and dissolution dates along with indications of the administrative means used to effect those changes. These devices, created by the government and authorized for use through the Statutes of Manitoba, have been identified and illustrated...

Gaughan, Jane Murphy. "One hundred years of art appreciation education: A cross comparison of the picture study movement with the discipline-based art education movement." 1990. https://scholarworks.umass.edu/dissertations/AAI9022686.

Full text
Abstract:
The history of art appreciation education has received increased attention since a 1985 Getty Center for Education in the Arts' report entitled, Beyond Creating: The Place for Art in America's Schools. The Getty report challenges teachers to reform art education, to shift from viewing art as a tool for self expression to art as a body of knowledge based on the four disciplines of art history, art criticism, aesthetics, and art production. One hundred years ago, classroom teachers promoted the study of reproductions of art in a movement called picture study. This dissertation compares the picture study movement, and its remnants extant in the progressive era, to the discipline-based art education movement of today. Period textbooks from three sources provide the primary data about early art appreciation education. First, a discrete picture study pedagogy is established through an analysis of three textbooks devoted solely to picture study. Second, an analysis of ten general art education textbooks from the progressive era shows that art appreciation remained an integral part of an overcrowded art curriculum. Lowenfeld's seminal Creative and Mental Growth shows a shift in attitude toward art appreciation in a text that has been regarded as having only negative bearing on the art appreciation movement. Finally, the contemporary discipline-based art education movement is chronicled and cross-compared to its forebears. The cross comparison is based on the following: philosophical foundations, approaches to curriculum, teacher audience and media, and format options. The researcher argues that the picture study movement of one hundred years ago and the discipline-based art education movement of today share an essentialist philosophy and imply a shared pedagogy, thereby establishing an important historical and conceptual niche for a heretofore neglected movement in art education history.

Abstract:
The Prefecture of Pella bought Heirachabis in 1895 and occupied it in 1898. This marked the beginning of the Mission in the South. The Oblates of Mary Immaculate officially started on 8 December 1896. They were allowed to minister among the Europeans and among Africans, not ministered to by a Protestant Mission. The first expansion was at Klein Windhoek, and at Swakopmund being the gateway to the Protectorate. The Tswana invited the Mission to help them after they had arrived from the Cape. Aminuis and Epukiro were founded. After 1905 the Mission was allowed to open stations among the Herera and Damara. Doebra, Gobabis, Usakos, Omaruru, and Okombahe were the result. Seven expeditions were undertaken to reach Kavango. After many failures the first mission became a reality at Nyangana in 1910. Just before the war the expansion reached Grootfontein, Tsumeb and Kokasib. In the South missions were opened at Warmbad, Gabis, Keetmanshoop, Luederitz and Gibeon. World War I scattered the African population of the towns which disturbed the missionary work. The S. A. Administration allowed most missionaries to stay. After the Peace Conference S. W. A. became a Mandate of S. A. In 1924 permission was granted to enter Owambo. The first station was opened in Ukuambi, later followed by Ombalantu and Okatana. In 1926 the Prefecture of Lower Cimbebasia was elevated to the Vicariate of Windhoek, while the Prefecture of Great Namaqualand became the Vicariate of Keetmanshoop in 1930. World War II left the missionary activities undisturbed. In 1943 Magistrate Trollop in Caprivi invited the Catholic Mission in 1943 to come and open educational and health facilities. The South expanded into Stampriet, Witkrans, Aroab, Mariental. The election victory in 1948 in South Africa of the Afrikaner Parties with the resulting apartheid legislation negatively affected the missions in S. W. A. After 1965 the influence of Vatican II became noticeable, while the pressure of the United Nations Organisation moved the territory towards independence. While initially the Catholic Church had been very cautious, in the ?O's and 80's she took a very definite stand in favour of human rights. She also became a full member of the CCN.
