Abstract:
Purpose Based on the combined experiences of operations and supply chain management (O&SCM) scholars and a reflective practitioner, the paper compares, contrasts and reconciles the competences needed to research O&SCM practice and to practice O&SCM research. The purpose of this paper is to locate these competences for young faculty in relation to their ambitions and career choices. Design/methodology/approach The paper is based upon the contributions made at European Operations Management Association 2014 Young Scholars Workshop (YSW). The theme and programme of the workshop was “Operations management – research and practice”. Findings The paper outlines first the concept of the YSW, the evolution of themes and the specific focus of the 2014 workshop. It concludes with a reflection on the career development of O&SCM scholars, their potential role, as academics or practitioners, in the development of O&SCM theory and practice, and the role of collaborative research in that development. Practical implications This paper shows what it takes for O&SCM researchers to engage with “the world around us” involves and, vice versa, how “doctorate” OM and SCM practitioners may successfully solve practical problems and engage with the O&SCM world surrounding them in doing so. Originality/value The paper presents a collection of viewpoints of O&SCM scholars and a reflective practitioner on the competences needed to research OM practice and to practice OM research.

Abstract:
Recent disruptions in global supply chains have led to increased interest in supply chain risk management investigation. On the other hand, increased environmental regulation has urged firms to compulsorily have their routine operations environmental friendly. Last few years, researchers have investigated these two streams as distinct but have mentioned them to be related in the long run. The current study attempts to bridge this gap of allied literature by conceptually arguing that it to arrive at sustainability in supply chain operations, firms must co-integrate their supply chain risk management and green practices in supply chain. While risk management broadly aims to reduce the exposure to a risky situation coupled with minimizing the negative impact of disruption of firm performance; green practices aims to make operational, tactical and strategic operations of the firm environment friendly. Based on sufficient theoretical tenets from related literature, the study attempts to develop a theoretical model linking supply chain risk management, green supply chain practices and sustainable supply chain. In doing so, the study provides an indicative list of various risk classifications and proposed risk mitigating strategies till date. Finally, the study indicates managerial implications and suggests further research opportunities.

Background: Reverse supply chains of machinery and equipment face significant challenges, and overcoming them is critical for effective customer service and sustainable operation. Maintenance and repair services, strongly associated with the reverse movement of equipment, are among the most demanding reverse supply chain operations. Equipment is scattered in various locations, and multiple suppliers are involved in its maintenance, making it challenging to manage the related reverse supply chain operations. Effective maintenance is essential for businesses-owners of the equipment, as reducing costs while improving service quality helps them gain a competitive advantage. Methods: To enhance reverse supply chain operations related to equipment maintenance, this paper presents the operational framework, the methodological approach, and the architecture for developing a system that covers the needs for predictive maintenance in the service supply chain. It is based on Industry 4.0 technologies, such as the Internet of things, machine learning, and cloud computing. Results: As a result of the successful implementation of the system, effective equipment maintenance and service supply chain management is achieved supporting the reverse supply chain. Conclusions: This will eventually lead to fewer good-conditioned spare part replacements, just in time replacements, extended equipment life cycles, and fewer unnecessary disposals.

Abstract:
This study explores the integration of blockchain technology and machine learning (ML) models to improve transparency, efficiency, and resilience in supply chain management. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, we developed a blockchain framework and tested ML models, including LSTM, ARIMA, Isolation Forest, One-Class SVM, Q-Learning, and Deep Q-Networks, to address demand forecasting, anomaly detection, and optimization. Our findings demonstrate that blockchain significantly enhances data integrity, traceability, and real-time monitoring across supply chains, particularly in industries like food and pharmaceuticals. Among ML models, LSTM showed superior performance for dynamic demand forecasting, while Isolation Forest was highly effective for real-time anomaly detection. Deep Q-Networks excelled in complex optimization tasks but required high computational resources, whereas Q-Learning proved efficient for simpler scenarios. This blockchain-ML integration presents a promising framework for advancing supply chain resilience, enabling secure and agile operations across diverse industrial applications. Limitations include blockchain’s scalability challenges and ML’s computational demands, suggesting areas for future research.

This paper looks at three examples that demonstrate how smart operations can reduce the uncertainty to reliably contribute to sustained growth in operations effectiveness. These relate to: demand/capability change; critical asset management; and, adaptive collaboration across processing/production areas and sites. While many heavy process industry organisations try to measure and manage the processing/production facilities using the operations effectiveness phrase, many have encountered difficulty in delivering the desired business improvement—whether it is achieving, sustaining, evolving or rolling out. This paper proposes a re-think based on successes in several industries. This paper defines what working smarter really means through making earlier and better decisions that affect the current performance of the processing/production facility and the supply chains. These decisions are often balancing naturally conflicting demands, both between facility and supply chain and between present and future events.

The strategy for the development of the supply chain should ensure a high level of fault tolerance of all links when exposed to adverse factors. The article analyzes the impact on the stability of the supply chain of two types of influences: failure and disruption. The low stability of the supply chain appears in the stoppage of work in case of any disruptions and failures. With moderate stability, disruptions do not give up a significant impact on the operation of the supply chain, and failures lead to an increase in operating costs to maintain the stability of work processes. With a high level of stability, failures can cause disruptions in the operations of individual links. In case of disruptions, response models are applied based on the control of process parameters, the subsequent analysis of the causes of disruptions and the development of measures to restore the normal operation of the links in the supply chain. Effective disruption response involves the use of proactive response models. For this, it is necessary to ensure flexibility and transparency of processes in all links of the supply chain based on digital services for material flow control and mining of big data.

Purpose This paper aims to introduce a supply chain strategy for supply chain sustainability performance and explain why it is different to normal business/operations strategy. Design/methodology/approach A survey of supply chain managers and detailed case studies of three successful supply chain sustainability organisations identified four components of a supply chain sustainability strategy, the mechanisms behind them and how they interacted. Findings Sustainability leadership, supply chain member involvement in organisational sustainability initiatives, supply chain member involvement in supply chain sustainability strategy planning and technical competency were identified as the four components of a sustainable supply chain strategy. Sustainability leadership legitimises the objectives and involvement of the staff in supply chain-oriented sustainability initiatives and planning. Technical competency provides the capability and language necessary for the development of a supply chain sustainability strategy. This is different to business/operations strategy, however, parallels to other forms of strategy constructs support its ability to achieve performance improvement. Research limitations/implications The research is based on data from developed countries; the findings may be different for emerging economies. Potential hypotheses for future research are suggested. Practical implications The supply chain sustainability strategy will enable organisations to improve the sustainability of their supply chains. Its application is described in the paper. Originality/value The paper develops a strategy framework different to the approach taken in business/operational strategy. It indicates how the sustainability performance of supply chains external to the organisation is increased through their interconnectedness with the organisation.

In their struggle for operational excellence, global companies face challenges in finding a common denominator to streamline and align supply chain operations across business units. The ever growing complexity of managing global flows of products, information and capital increases the risk of deploying inapt operations leading to deterioration of profits. To address this problem, the authors propose a unified business process design framework based on the paradigm of intelligence. Intelligence allows humans and human-designed systems cope with environmental volatility, and the authors argue that its principles applied to the context of organizational processes can increase the success rate of business operations. <p>Globalisation requires from companies greater flexibility and adaptability of its internal processes, to allow them be aligned to market requirements. This flexibility results in new forms of relationships between partners, supply chains. For these chains differentiate themselves from their competitors, they should add value to products and services that they deliver to the end customer, while being profitable from the standpoint of its processes and operations. In this sense, would be needed effective supply chain management, which is constituted by collaboration and cooperation among partners, strategic and processes integration, to result in a profitable operation, and products and services with added value to the customer. Additionally, because logistics is a key element for the integration and collaboration among SC members, and due the fact that, depending of the scope of these chains, there are potentially more risks happening, which may have negative impacts on the customer service level, and consequently, loss of effectiveness of their logistics processes. This research aims to analyze the effect of supply chain organizational and supply agility on the performance of supply chain performance through the mediation role of the supply chain strategy in the retail industry. Retail business design creates novelty, it is very important for manufacturers to stay focused on producing goods. The presence of a retail shop will make it easier for consumers to get the goods and services they want. The research sample includes 180 companies or respondents. The results indicate that the supply chain strategy had no significant effect on the supply chain operational performance, while the other hypotheses were stated to be significant, and the supply chain strategy as a mediator had a positive and significant effect on the supply chain operations performance of retail shops. The research includes discovering that supply chain strategy bridges organizational supply chains and supplier agility performance in retail outlets. The research will directly contribute to the growing literature on innovation in supply chain management implementation of retail shops in Indonesia and other countries.

The approach that a company takes towards the preservation of the natural world and the part it plays in the introduction of environmentally responsible policies is what is meant by the term "environmental orientation." Green supply chain management, on the other hand, entails the incorporation of environmentally friendly practises throughout the entirety of the supply chain, beginning with the procurement of raw materials and continuing all the way through the delivery of finished goods. The objective of green supply chain management is to lessen the negative impact that a company's operations have on the surrounding environment while simultaneously maintaining or improving the company's level of performance. In this study, we investigate the connection between environmentally conscious business practises, environmentally conscious management of supply chains, and successful business operations. In addition to this, we investigate the role that green supply chain management plays as a mediator in this connection. According to our findings, an environmental orientation appears to have a positive influence on green supply chain management, which in turn appears to have a positive influence on corporate performance. In addition, we discovered that environmentally responsible management of supply chains acts as a moderating variable, thereby reinforcing the connection between environmental orientation and business performance. Our findings shed light on the significance of environmental orientation as well as environmentally responsible management of supply chains in the process of improving corporate performance. Abstract The research examined the effect of supply chain management on firm’s operational performance in Nigeria manufacturing companies with specific interest on supply chain strategy and supply chain flexibility. A random effect model was developed to examine whether there is a significant effect on the variables identified, and the level of significance that exist in the variables. This study adopts an ex post-facto type of descriptive research design using Secondary sources to generate the data. The data were gathered from the annual report of manufacturing companies between 2011 and 2016. Findings revealed that supply chain management does not have a significant overall effect on operational performance at Prob value =0.343 which is above the sig. level of <.005, and the magnitude of variation which supply chain management cause on operational performance is 7.6% for all the companies samples which is significantly low. Hence, it is recommended that the management of a company’s supply chain do not necessarily affect their operations; thus organizations can adopt a combination of strategies and flexibilities in their level of operation.

It is also necessary that there are several mediating variables, such as effective supply chain collaboration, supply chain management, and innovation capability, which influence the relationship between supply chain ambidexterity and firm performance. This study aims to determine the extent to which ambidexterity can influence supply chain performance and how the role of lean and agile supply chains mediates the relationship between these variables. The research method used in this study is a quantitative approach. The number of samples analyzed in this study was 225. The results of the study concluded that ambidexterity helps companies to overcome pressure to optimize short- and long-term performance, maintain agility and flexibility in adapting to changes in the business environment. Studies on ambidexterity and supply chain performance have shown that ambidexterity can help directly optimize supply chain performance but can also amplify the positive impact of practices such as lean supply chain and agile supply chain. The implications obtained from the findings are that companies are expected to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness and have the ability to adapt to environmental changes and market demands.

One of the key business functions that is impacted by the implementation of different disruptive technologies is the supply chain management. As a result, there is a continuous need to identify where digitalizing supply chains may provide businesses with benefits to capitalize such gains. This study aims to examine potential impacts of digitalizing supply chains on five selected lean operations practices through the identification of key areas and benefits under each of these practices. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 74 participants mainly from the academic community and who were university scholars through the use of an online survey. The used online survey consists of six main parts in total, but three were included in this paper and these were designed to gather data about participants’ general information, level of influence of seven technological trends on supply chain performance and management and potential impact of digitalizing supply chains on five lean operations practices. Findings The authors were able to confirm the significant impact of digitalizing supply chains on the five examined lean operations practices. Most of the examined potential impacts were found to improve certain areas that directly improve the practices of the explored five lean operations practices as well as the overall supply chain and business performance. They were also able to determine the level of influence of the seven examined enabling technologies on supply chain performance and management. Originality/value To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this study is the first of its kind. Although some literature explored different aspects related to the concept of Industry 4.0 and digitalizing supply chains, no study has specifically explored potential impacts of digitalizing supply chains on lean operations. The results from this study can be beneficial to academic scholars interested in the researched themes, business professionals specializing in supply chain management and lean operations, organizations within different industrial sectors particularly manufacturing where lean thinking is adopted and any other party interested in understanding more about the impact of digitalizing supply chain on lean operations and on an overall business performance.

Intermodal transport systems are much more complex than the unimodal ones due to the number of stakeholders, included transportation resources, infrastructure and processes, which in case of poor coordination in the planning, organization and implementation of transport chain logistic activities can lead to increased supply chain vulnerability. Therefore, the main challenge in the functioning of intermodal transport operations in supply chains is to increase their efficiency taking into account the problems of associated risks. The current initiatives on the topic of identification and management of risks in the intermodal supply chains do not provide a complete and clear picture of the potential problems which the intermodal supply chains are exposed to. The purpose of this paper is to analyze practices of manufacturing companies and how they balance demand/supply in operations. Design/methodology/approach – Questionnaire-based interview has been conducted at 20 largest companies having manufacturing/operations in Finland. Findings – Supply chain structure, flexibility, demand management, capacity management, inventory management and revenue management are perceived as key practices for DSB. Research limitations/implications – The results show importance of supply chain-related parameters such as supply chain flexibility and inventory management in addition to production planning and control. The study is delimited to Finland companies but it gives an idea how decision making in operations generally can be perceived. Practical implications – DSB actions should be connected to operations strategy and long-term planning of the company. Originality/value – DSB is a strategic-level operations question which has an impact on several functions of supply chain.

The paper investigates the offshore crisis 2015–2017 and its impact on central international offshore oil and gas related maritime cluster, the Blue Maritime Cluster, located at the North-Western coast of Norway.This complete maritime cluster, heavily involved in offshore petroleum operations, it experienced an almost devastating blow, as it lost almost one-third of its employees as its value added contracted by 39 percent.When the crises is basically seen as a result of falling of oil prices and lower activity and squeezed profit margins, this paper investigates the crisis in the light of financial instability and reactions down the maritime supply chain. By collecting data from the Blue Maritime Cluster and the Norwegian central company register one is able both to trace the fall in the activity due to the crisis and measures of financial strength. The study approaches the data by using a structural time series analysis in order to map cycles as deviations from polynomial trends.The findings ascertain that financial instability was dominant within the Blue Maritime Cluster during its boom before the crisis. Debt ratios and thereby gearing (leverage) were high. Thus, the companies could not meet their obligations when the crisis hit.The paper also finds that narrow focused supply chain management made the cluster fall deep into the abyss. Companies with a more diversified portfolio were able to meet the hard years better than others.

With such significant growth in the LNG industry and the broader energy and natural resources sector, the supply-chain risk and the cost of sourcing capital equipment and materials is increasingly difficult to manage. Many organisations are beginning to consider the merits of moving to a tax-efficient supply chain and procurement model, both through sourcing from a low-cost country and also centralising purchasing and supply operations in a tax-efficient location. Tax-efficient sourcing integrates supply chain and procurement-operating model design with tax planning to deliver significant cost reductions and profit increases through centrally controlling procurement operations. The consideration of the most efficient tax structures to support sourcing and distribution of equipment also delivers. Centrally controlled strategic and tactical supply chain and procurement operations in a tax-efficient location support an organisation in: realising benefits through leveraging scale in operations and procurement; designing a flexible framework that can be used to decide which categories of spending are managed globally, regionally, and locally;and, the acceleration and sustainability of significant procurement savings delivery from low-cost locations. Planning and management of the tax implications of physical supply-chain operations to reduce the actual taxes paid on profits and operations happen through: the potential to reduce corporate taxes on company profits; reducing absolute value-added tax (VAT) payable or cash-flow cost of VAT; reducing duty payable; optimising the indirect taxes paid on physical flows; and, change of transfer pricing driving reduction in effective corporate tax rates.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to develop and empirically assess a comprehensive operations and supply chain management (SCM) model. The theorized model incorporates supply chain market orientation, Just-in-Time (JIT) and Total Quality Management (TQM) as antecedents and agile production (AP) and green SCM (GSCM) practices as consequences. Design/methodology/approach Data from a sample of 136 US manufacturing managers were collected via an on-line survey firm. A partial least squares structural equation modeling is used to assess the efficacy of the theorized model. Findings Generally, market orientation supports the implementation of JIT and TQM, JIT and TQM support implementation of SCM, SCM supports implementation of AP and green supply chain management practices (GSCMP) and AP and GSCMP positively impact organizational performance. Research limitations/implications The model tested reflects the synergy created though the implementation of management improvement programs that support the six strategic imperatives of customer focus, efficiency, effectiveness, integration with supply chain partners, responsiveness, and environmental sustainability and the effects of those programs on the marketing and financial performance of manufacturing organizations. Practical implications The theorized model and results provide practicing managers with a blueprint for the systematic implementation of the improvement programs. Originality/value A comprehensive operations and SCM model is proposed and empirically assessed. The results of this investigation support the proposition that market orientation, JIT, TQM, SCM, AP and GSCMPs combine to positively affect organizational performance. The central role of the SCM construct is emphasized.

Effective design and management of supply chains assists in the production and delivery of a variety of products at low costs, high quality, and short lead times. Recently, data envelopment analysis (DEA) has been extended to examine the efficiency of supply chain operations. Due to the existence of intermediate measures, the usual procedure of adjusting the inputs or outputs, as in the standard DEA approach, does not necessarily yield a frontier projection. The current paper develops a DEA model for measuring the performance of suppliers and manufacturers in supply chain operations. Additive efficiency decomposition for suppliers and manufacturers in supply chain operations is proposed.

By immersion in fashion brands, suppliers and workers' realities across multiple supply chains, the authors identify challenges and issues related to just transitions, whilst proposing research pathways to inspire future OSCM research and collaboration using innovative and creative methods to answer complex questions related to just transition.Design/methodology/approachThe research the authors introduce used a multi-level field research approach to investigate multiple fashion supply chains in transition.FindingsThe authors uncovered that in the pursuit of lowering carbon emissions, fast-fashion giants work with industrial associations to create top-down governance tools, leading to severe problems in supply chain data and paradoxical demands. These demands are cascaded onto the workers in these supply chains. The goals and tools dictated by the fashion giants exclude workers, whilst the physiological and psychological effects on the workers are routinely ignored. These issues impede a just transition to a low-carbon fashion industry.Originality/valueThe authors introduce concepts largely missing from OSCM literature and ensure representation of the most marginalised group, supply chain workers, in a novel setting in a call for research in this emerging area.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to examine the value chain processes that represent the “black box” between supply logistics integration and competitive operational performance in firms. To realize this objective, the authors develop a research model which comprises a series of linkages from supply logistics integration to operational outcomes using Porter’s concept of value chain and the relational view of resource-based theory as theoretical lenses. Design/methodology/approach – The data set for testing the hypothesized relationships in this study was drawn from 232 Australian manufacturing firms. Findings – The findings show that there is no significant direct relationship between supply logistics integration and competitive operational performance; rather, the relationship is fully mediated by inbound supply performance and internal lean production processes. Further, lean production processes have a positive effect on inbound supply performance. Research limitations/implications – The study shows the importance of managing both internal (production processes) and external processes (logistics and supply chain) of firms’ operations in an integrated manner in which supply logistics integration act through key internal processes to impact competitive performance which the end customers actually experience. Originality/value – This is the first study which uncovers what happens “in between” the incoming materials and the end outputs delivered by firms into the market. This “in between black box” is important in improving our understanding of how inbound supply activities are translated into outbound competitive performance outcomes.

Namun terdapat tantangan dalam proses pengolahan dan distribusi produk yang mempengaruhi rendahnya daya saing UMKM Jamur Krispi, maka dibutuhkanlah peningkatan kinerja supply chain dalam mengolah produk dan memenuhi permintaan konsumen. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengukur dan mengevaluasi kinerja Supply Chain Management (SCM) pada UMKM Jamur Krispi agar perbaikan dengan strategi baru dapat dilakukan. Proses pengukuran performa rantai pasok menggunakan metode Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) sebagai model konseptual yang dapat menjabarkan rantai pasok menjadi metrik agar didapatkan manajemen rantai pasok yang lebih efisien. Bobot performa dari setiap indikator akan dihitung menggunakan Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) berdasarkan jawaban kuesioner perbandingan berpasangan dari pemilik UMKM yang dianalisis. Hasil penelitian ini diperoleh 23 indikator dari lima proses yaitu plan, make, source, delivery, dan return, dengan nilai akhir kinerja SCM sebesar 80,891 dan tergolong baik. Proses inti yang memiliki nilai kinerja rendah adalah plan dan return yang masing-masing sebesar 8.098 dan 9.049. Abstract— MSMEs in the food and beverage sector significantly contribute to the national economy of 7,02%. One type of food with excellent market prospects is processed crispy mushroom products. However, there are challenges in the process of making and distributing the product that affects the low competitiveness of the Crispy Mushroom SME; thus, an increase in supply chain management performance is needed in processing the product and meeting customer demand. This study aims to measure and evaluate the performance of Supply Chain Management (SCM) in the SME of Crispy Mushroom for improvements with new strategies that can be carried out. The process of measuring SCM performance uses the Supply Chain Operations Reference (SCOR) method as a conceptual model that can describe the supply chain into metrics for obtaining more efficient supply chain management. The performance weight of each indicator will be calculated using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) based on the answers to questionnaires from the analyzed business owner. The results of this study obtained 23 indicators from five processes, namely plan, make, source, delivery, and return, with the final value of SCM performance being good. With the absolute value of SCM performance of 80.891 and classified as good. The core processes with low-performance values are plan and return, which are 8,098 and 9,049, respectively.
