Intermittently Closed and Open Lake Lagoons (ICOLLs) are very common along the southern NSW coastline. Expanding urban populations are expanding and these systems are under increasing pressure from anthropogenic activities that change landscape processes and significantly alter the amounts of organic and inorganic constituents entering their waters. Once efficient cycling of nutrients in ICOLLs is overcome, the symptoms of eutrophication establish and the entire ecosystem suffers. Biological treatment forms an integral part of wastewater treatment. Biological aerated filters (BAFs) are submerged attached growth bioreactors which provide biological treatment as well as filtration in a single unit. The packing media used in BAFs plays an important role in the system performance and determines the ability of the system to meet treatment objectives. The performance of upflow BAFs was compared using North American clay media and Severn Trent monomedia at low organic and hydraulic loads (0.18 kg tCOD/m3d – 0.6 kg tCOD/m3d and 0.1 m/hr – 0.38 m/hr, respectively). Abstract:
Hydrogen has been studying as an alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels. This is justified because, in its combustion is generating primarily water vapor and by its energy content is approximately 2.5 times greater than any fossil fuel. Besides these advantages, hydrogen can be produced from renewable sources, such as various types of industrial and domestic waste rich in carbohydrates. Thus, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the production of hydrogen from a substrate real, the manipueira (wastewater processing cassava), as carbon source in anaerobic fluidized bed reactor (

AD is regarded as a sustainable technology that could assist the UK Government meet internationally agreed GHG emission targets by 2050. However, the mature status of the technology is based on expensive systems that rely on high energy feedstock to be profitable. Meanwhile, the natural biodegradation of cow slurry is a recognised contributor to climate change despite having a relatively low CH4 potential because of the large volumes produced. Economic mixing is essential to the cost-effectiveness of farm AD but techniques applied are not always appropriate as slurry is a shear thinning thixot

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)<br>Phosphorus (P) is essential for aquatic life; cycling between both inorganic and organic forms to maintain an ecological balance. Its addition into P-scarce freshwaters, either through terrestrial (external) or sedimentary (internal) loading, may disrupt this balance causing blooms of phytoplankton to flourish, often resulting in harmful environmental and anthropogenic consequences. Accordingly, reduction of external P loading has been commonly implemented with a recent focus on sediment-bound legacy P that is mobilized into the wate

The aim of the investigation was to compare the performance of an anaerobic baffled reactor (ABR) with a completely mixed anaerobic reactor (CMAR). The ABR was operated with a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 20 h while the CMAR was operated at 20 d. A control experiment was conducted with a CMAR operated at a constant hydraulic retention time and substrate feed concentration. During the first phase, the start-up performance of the ABR and CMAR were compared. In the second phase of the study the steady state COD removals were compared. This thesis aims to contribute for the study of critical factors that influence the removal of organic matter and nitrogen in constructed wetlands with horizontal subsurface flow. It was realized that plants contribute for increasing the removal of organic matter and nitrogen, because they provide oxygen to the rhizosphere and the gowth of roots increases the surface area for biofilm development and uptake nitrogen through the roots. The Phragmites australis releases more oxygen during the daytime, and the oxygen transfer capacity was noted to change between 0.03 and 1.53 gO2.m-2.d-1. There wa
