Abstract:
Evidence suggests that the neurotropic parasite Toxoplasma gondii may play a role in the development of cognitive impairments. My hypothesis was that congenital exposure to T. gondii would lead to detectable age and sex related differences in behavior and neurotransmitter levels in mice. The neurotransmitter dopamine and commonly used anti-schizophrenic agents were evaluated against T. gondii in human fibroblast cells. Dopamine caused a significant increase in tachyzoite numbers at 250 nM but not 100 nM and the drugs valproic acid, fluphenazine, thioridazine and trifluoperazine inhibited T. go

Harmful behaviour towards self and others is defined as substance use, suicidal and aggressive behaviour. This study explores an assumption that tobacco, alcohol and other drug abuse, suicidal and aggressive behaviour constitute one problem behaviour syndrome, as they perform the same functions in the life of an adolescent. The study is aimed to determine whether harmful behaviour towards self and others can be identified with the same psychosocial factors. Due attention is focused i

Human evolution has been linked to climate change multiple times in the literature. One of the more well-known theories is the ‘savannah’ theory, which states that walking upright became an advantageous character when climate in Africa changed causing drier environments, changing woodlands to savannahs. Human ancestors could cross open fields more easily when walking upright, therefore it was thought that climate change could be a driving factor in the change to bipedal locomotion. Five hominin species were the basis of the study presented here, showing that change towards bipedal locomotion w

Many land systems experience massive ecological pressure due to ongoing land use changes for the increasing demand for food, but also need to sustain essential ecosystem services. Computer-based model scenarios help to anticipate the consequences of different socio-economic future transition pathways for humans and nature and evaluate trade-offs between various demands on land. In many grassland ecosystems, the processes of agricultural abandonment in less attractive regions coexist with agricultural intensification in others. Climate change is an enormous challenge which, if not addressed will have detrimental impacts across the globe. This problem is largely produced by human behaviour. Therefore, strategies aimed at influencing behaviour are necessary in addressing this issue. Although these methods are creating change, it is far from sufficient to address the massive and urgent issue of climate change. Therefore, alternative strategies should be considered. As
