This thesis describes the development of a range of polydentate phosphorus-containing ligands relevant to catalysis. The focus is on developing a fundamental understanding of how changes to the substituents on a ligand impact on the environment at a coordinated metal centre. Chapter 2 reports the synthesis and coordination chemistry of the phosphine-alkene ligands N-R2P-7-aza-benzobicyclo[2.2.1]hept-2-ene, R = Ph (2-1) and iPr (2-2). The Thesis deals with the preparation, coordination chemistry and use in asymmetric homogeneous catalysis of several optically pure P-stereogenic ligands containing a tert-butylmethylphosphino fragment. Les iminophosphoranes, analogues phosphorés des ylures de phosphore, sont de puissants donneurs en particulier pour les métaux durs. La synthèse des iminophosphoranes par la méthode de Staudinger (azides) est la méthodologie la plus couramment employée mais limite les schémas de substitution sur l'azote et rend en fait difficile l'accès aux iminophosphoranes chiraux.
