Molt is the process of plumage renewal by which birds maintain and adjust its functionality throughout their lifecycle. Multiple elements have been tackled in bird molt research (timing, duration, sequence, intensity, extent, feather growth rate, and plumage quality), but major gaps still exist on molt regulation, and especially on molt evolution. This thesis focuses on one molt element extensively recorded since mid-20th century but seldom studied as an individual trait: the set of feathers replaced after a given molt episode by one individual (here referred to as final molt phenotype). <p>I use morphological, vocal, molecular, behavioural, ecological and distributional data to re-evaluate the systematics of three passerine bird groups, the <i>Mirafraassamica </i>complex (bush-larks), the genus <i>Seicercus</i> ("spectacled-warblers"; with emphasis on the the <i>S. burkii</i> complex) and the genus <i>Motacilla</i> (wagtails). Swallows (Hirundo rustiea), Dippers (Cinelus einelus) and Great Tits (Parus nlajor) were studied at sites in Central Scotland. This study addressed two aspects of ecological theory developed primarily in North America and examined these theories using an Australian passerine as a model species. The first theory concerns the mechanisms by which habitat fragmentation affects avian populations. The ecology of Protocalliphora parasitism was studied for a two-year period in two species of cavity nesting passerine birds breeding in southwestern Quebec, the eastern bluebird (Sialia sialis Linnaeus) and the tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor Vieillot). Both species occupied next boxes in open field habitats.
