The pea weevil (Bruchus pisorum L.) is the most significant pest of field pea (Pisum sativum L.) in Australia. The only available means for controlling pea weevil at the present time is with chemical pesticides. The aim of this study was to introgress natural pea weevil resistance, derived from the wild pea species, Pisum fulvum Sibth. & Sm. into cultivated field pea and devise strategies for screening for the resistance with breeding applications. Traditional breeding methods were used to transfer pea weevil resistance from P. fulvum accession ‘ATC113’ to cultivated field pea, cv. ‘Pennant’.

These benefits include a disease break and improved weed control for cereals and less dependence on nitrogenous fertilisers due to the leguminous nature of pea. Recently developed methods of growth and yield analysis were applied to the results of a field experiment to determine (i) the effect of seed inoculation on the growth and yield of two cultivairs of garden pea (Pisum sativum L.) - 'Dark Skin Perfection' (DSP) and 'Early Frosty' (EF), (ii) the physiological basis for yield variability and (iii) the dynamics of reproductive growth in the pea. Peat moorlands represent a nationally significant carbon store. Wildfires in peat moorlands release CO2 into the atmosphere, reducing the carbon store and burn into the seed bank preventing vegetation recovery. Burned areas of bare peat remain, known as ‘burn scars’ which are eroded by freeze thaw and desiccation, then weathered by precipitation and wind to cause discolouration of the water supply. Les travaux réalisés antérieurement au laboratoire avaient identifié de façon préliminaire un gène de fusion dans cette tumeur. Grâce à la mise au point d’une RT-PCR multiplexe et de FISH bicolore adaptées aux prélèvements fixés et inclus en paraffine, nous avons étudié au niveau moléculaire la plus grande série de cas de DP à ce jour. Nous montrons que le gène de fusion COL1A1-PDGFB est pathognomonique du DP. De plus, nous l’avons détecté dans des tumeurs proches comme le fibroblastome à cellules

The glasshouse experiments measure the effects of depth of placement and level of phosphorus (P) on the growth of field peas (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alma).
