Abstract:
Less than a decade ago Robin Seager wrote that further discussion of the Peace of Callias would be inexcusable. Needless to say, discussion has continued. Wherever one stands, on the problem as such, it ought to be admitted that new ideas have been put forward, or (since it seems unlikely, on a topic so much discussed, that anything new can now be said) at least old and forgotten ones have been revived and put in new perspectives. The continuing and polemical debate over the authenticity of the Peace of Callias has become so complicated that it would be a positive service to scholarship to remove some of the more contentious evidence and reduce the scope of the argument. That is the object of this article. A fragment of Callisthenes has bulked very large in the modern literature. According to the received view the Olynthian historian denied the existence of a formal peace between Athens and the Persian King and alleged that the King observed a de facto limit to his empire, never venturing west of the Chelidonian islands

Ernst Badian has argued that it would have been ideologically unacceptable for the great king of Persia to submit to negotiations with Athens and to bind himself by oath to the resulting Peace of Callias. This interpretation, however, is the result of the later Greek conception of the Peace of Callias as an Athenian victory over Persia, and the Peace of Antalcidas as a Persian humiliation of Greece. In this paper, I argue that the Achaemenid kings of Persia inherited notions of kinship, empire, and diplomacy from their Neo-Assyrian predecessors, and therefore saw treaties as an honorable and l

The goal of this study is to examine the ways in which dialogue and peace are promoted and mobilized through a Facebook page in the protracted, ethnopolitical conflict between Israeli-Jews and Palestinians. A thematic qualitative text analysis based on the grounded theory approach was conducted on posts and comments that were published on the Facebook page of the Israeli grassroots movement Women Wage Peace (WWP), created by the Jewish and Arab women that participate in this movement. Our findings point to three major mechanisms through which attempts to mobilize peace were performed: building

The establishment of peace among Christian princes was a task assigned to the Fifth Lateran Council (1512–17) by the election capitularies of Julius ii (1503–13) and Leo X (1513–21), formally adopted in the bull of convocation, and repeated in the conciliar speeches of the popes and orators. The popes intervened to settle squabbles among conciliar participants and had the council issue bulls calling for peace and mandating prayers for it and the sending of letters, nuncios, and legates to promote it. Based on interviews and other historical research on the Irish Republican Army (IRA), Euskadi Ta Askatasuna (ETA), the Tamil Tigers, Shining Path, and Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA), this dissertation argues that pre-a

Abstract:
Abstract This chapter explores the protest strategies of Periods for Pence, a collective of Indiana menstruators and allies who organized in response to the passing of extreme antiabortion legislation, House Enrolled Act 1337, by then-Governor Mike Pence in 2016. Through an analysis of the group’s transcribed calls to Pence’s office, as well as various social media posts, Conner illustrates how Periods for Pence engaged in acts of narrative sharing, humor, and symbolic reversal to craft a cohesive account of varied experiences with menstruation. The study also draws on logics of menstruation to rhetorically re-moralize abortion as necessary. Conner concludes by demonstrating how critical study of menstruation-related activism asks scholars to rethink traditional conceptualizations of static “waves” of feminism and feminist rhetorical theorizing.

Abstract:
It is a time-honoured belief among just war theorists that the desired end of a just war should be peace, not victory. This chapter interrogates this proposition. It asks what kind of relation, if any, should we envisage between peace and victory in respect of the ends of just war? The concern this question raises is not simply that peace and victory constitute distinct objectives for a just war. It is that they might also be mutually implicated yet incompatible aims. Drawing on the writings of Marcus Tullius Cicero, this chapter examines this concern and reflects on what it tells us about the idea of just war. It contends that the relation between victory and peace exposes what we might call the paradox of just war: the act of winning a just war is likely to undermine the peace that the just war is being fought to advance.

Abstract:
This chapter argues for rethinking and reassessing our understanding of how mediation is related conceptually and practically to constitution making. In many cases of armed intra state conflict or social unrest calling for democratic transition, the core issues are of deep constitutional relevance, speaking to the political transformation of the state. To address the constitutional issues in such conflict contexts, peace or transition processes often combine peace making and constitution making. Despite this clear connection in practice, scholarship on the relationship between mediation and constitution making is largely absent. The chapter proposes new ways of thinking about how a mutual relationship may be forged to better contribute to the transformation of conflict for sustaining peace.

This article describes how a great prophet, Jeremiah, who was chosen by God, worked among the Israelites who were living in exile. During his ministry, he received a lot of criticism from other prophets; there was a conflict in the news.
