Hermans, Renee Elisabeth Maria. "Impact of forest-to-bog restoration on greenhouse gas fluxes." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/27319.

Full text
Abstract:
Large areas of northern peatlands have been drained and afforested in the second half of the 20th century with significant impacts on important ecosystem services, including loss of biodiversity and potential changes in C storage. A considerable effort is currently invested into restoring original peatland function and ecosystem services, with an increasing area of newly restored peatland areas over recent years. However, the effect of restoration on the greenhouse gas (GHG) budget is unknown. This study is the first quantification of CO2, CH4 and N2O fluxes from forest-to-bog restoration site

Abstract:
Development of hydroelectricity in recent years has stirred an international debate in relation to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by flooding, which results from the creation of hydroelectric reservoirs. The debate focuses on whether hydroelectric reservoirs are negligible global GHG sources, particularly with regards to carbon dioxide (CO₂) and methane (CH₄). Most carbon (C) exchange studies applied to hydroelectric reservoirs have been based on irregular or sporadic field measurements and, therefore, hardly address the transient nature of reservoir C flux and the heterogeneity in flux

Abstract:
Peatlands are associated with a range of ecosystem services such as long-term carbon storage and sequestration, biodiversity, and potential water reservoirs, mitigating floods and droughts. However, in the 20th century, large peatland areas in the northern temperate and boreal regions were drained by ditching, primarily to enhance forest and agricultural production and peat harvesting. Drainage of peatland is associated with a reduction in wet tolerant peatland species, reduced long term carbon sequestration and increased carbon emissions, conflicting with the goals of the Convention on Biolog

Abstract:
Many onshore windfarms in Scotland are being built on peatlands. As a consequence, the impacts of development activities on the peatland and downstream environments are an important emerging issue. For example, a reduction of the quantity of carbon (C) stored in the peatland and increased phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) concentrations in streams may cause changes in the peatland carbon sink strength and aquatic carbon emissions, and exceedance of EU Water Framework Directive (WFD) P threshold values, respectively. Abstract:
Northern peatlands are an important carbon store, with carbon dynamics and hydrology intrinsically linked. The riparian zone is the interface between the terrestrial and aquatic systems, situated adjacent to the stream and characterised by periodic flooding, near surface water tables and unique soil and plant species composition. Due to its unique biogeochemical environment, the riparian zone has the potential to modify significantly the production, mobilisation and transport of carbon via the land-atmosphere and aquatic pathways. The photochemical reflectance index (PRI) is a remotely sensed vegetation index that detects a decrease in spectral reflectance at 531nm associated with xanthophyll cycle activity. PRI has been shown to track light use efficiency (LUE) in a number of plant species. PRI shows great promise in improving our ability to sense photosynthetic fluxes of CO2 remotely. However, it has not been tested in all environments, and its applicability is particularly uncertain for peatland environments dominated by mosses. Holding approximately 89,000 Tg of organic carbon, tropical peatlands are one of the largest pedological sinks of carbon (Page et al., 2011). However, from 1990 to 2010, the forest cover in the peatlands of South East Asia fell from 77% to 36%; at this rate of decline, all of the undisturbed peatlands are likely to have disappeared by 2030 (Li et al., 2007; Koh et al., 2011; Miettinen et al., 2011). Abstract Mechanical harvesting of peat changes the original mire ecosystem completely, and without active measures these areas may remain non-vegetated even for decades. Afforestation is one of the most popular after-use options for cut-away peatlands in Finland since it has both economic and aesthetic values. Recycling of wood-ash as a fertilizer has been studied extensively in peatlands drained for forestry. Wood-ash is reported to promote tree growth in these areas without any significant negative impact to the environment and could, therefore, be a suitable option also on cut-away peatland

Abstract:
Indonesia's tropical peatland ecosystems constitute one of the largest terrestrial carbon pools in the world. However, anthropogenic and natural disturbances can convert the peatland ecosystems' status from carbon sinks and stores to sources. Huge amounts of carbon are released to the atmosphere as CO2 through peat decomposition and fire. When these emissions are taken into account, Indonesia became one of the largest CO2 emitter worldwide. Despite their significant role in the global climate change, tropical peatland ecosystems (particularly peat swamp forests) are inadequately studied. Thus,
