This work is concerned with the spatio-temporal structures that emerge when non-identical, diffusively coupled oscillators synchronize. It contains analytical results and their confirmation through extensive computer simulations. We use the Kuramoto model which reduces general oscillatory systems to phase dynamics. The symmetry of the coupling plays an important role for the formation of patterns. We have studied the ordering influence of an asymmetry (non-isochronicity) in the phase coupling function on the phase profile in synchronization and the intricate interplay between this asymmetry an

The Kibble Zurek mechanism describes the universal formation of topological defects during continuous symmetry breaking phase transitions. It has been confirmed in a wide variety of systems and is of interest within theoretical high energy physics and cosmology. While during high temperature phase transitions classical methods can be used to study topological defect formation, in zero temperature quantum phase transitions, quantum effects can dominate dynamics such that classical approximations fail. This is problematic in quantum field theory because topological defect formation constitutes a

This thesis presents the formation mechanism of intermetallics formed at Fe-Al film interfaces. Al thin films with different initial film thicknesses were coated on low carbon steel substrates by physical vapor deposition (PVD). By annealing the system at different temperatures and for different time intervals, several intermetallic phases were observed. X-Ray, SEM and EDS studies showed that intermetallic phases FeAl2 and Fe2Al5 are most dominant phases which were observed and they formed sequentially on the contrary of intermetallics which formed synchronous in bulk materials.
