Gas-phase electron diffraction (GED) is the method of choice for determining the structures of molecules containing between two and 100 atoms, free from intermolecular interaction. However, for many molecules it becomes necessary to augment the experimental GED data with information from other sources. The growth of ZnO single crystals and ZnO thin films on Si substrates by an open-system vapor phase method was studied in this thesis. Abstract:

We analyze full-orbit phase curve observations of the transiting hot Jupiters WASP-19b and HAT-P-7b at 3.6 and 4.5 mu m, obtained using the Spitzer Space Telescope. For WASP-19b, we measure secondary eclipse depths of 0.485% +/- 0.024% and 0.584% +/- 0.029% at 3.6 and 4.5 mu m, which are consistent with a single blackbody with effective temperature 2372 +/- 60 K. The measured 3.6 and 4.5 mu m secondary eclipse depths for HAT-P-7b are 0.156% +/- 0.009% and 0.190% +/- 0.006%, which are well described by a single blackbody with effective temperature 2667 +/- 57 K. The Ph.D. project compiled in this thesis has focused on the role of the solvent in solid-liquid phase equilibria and in nucleation kinetics. Six organic substances have been selected as model compounds, viz. ortho-, meta- and para-hydroxybenzoic acid, salicylamide, meta- and para-aminobenzoic acid. The different types of crystal phases of these compounds have been explored, and their respective solid-state properties have been determined experimentally. Histone Nuclear Factor P (HiNF-P) is a known transcriptional regulator that is critical for the activation of replication dependent histone H4 genes during S phase. HiNF-P is a 65 kDa zinc finger protein that binds to its consensus binding sequence in the Cell Cycle Control Element (Site II) of the proximal promoter region of 11 of the 14 histone H4 genes.
